Xabi Alonso Maintains Silence Regarding Rumors Linking Him to Liverpool and Bayern Munich

Bayer Leverkusen chief Alonso avoiding all transfer rumors

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso has avoided all transfer rumors linking him to Liverpool and Bayern Munich. The Spaniard has emerged as a frontrunner for both jobs with Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel leaving their sides at the end of the 2023-24 season.

Alonso has done a fabulous job since taking over the helm of Leverkusen in October 2022. He first guided them from relegation zone to sixth-place finish last season, and is now leading Die Werkself to their first ever Bundesliga title. Indeed, they are eight points clear of holders Bayern in first position with 11 games remaining.

The former Liverpool and Bayern midfielder was questioned about his future recently, but he avoided giving a direct answer. Alonso said:

“Maybe you have questions about my future. I have nothing new to say about that. I wanted to say that in advance. Right now, I’m the coach here, that’s for sure. For the future I have nothing new to say, we’ll see.”

Alonso has a contract with Leverkusen until 2026. Although there’s no release clause, it’s believed that the 42-year-old will be allowed to leave if he decides to take on a new role. Should he indeed win the league title with Leverkusen, it will only bolster his profile further, with a few more clubs lining up for his services.

Liverpool and Bayern overseeing vastly different seasons

Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel are leaving after completely different seasons. While Klopp’s Liverpool is actively competing for trophies on all four fronts, Tuchel’s Bayern is headed towards a titleless campaign. The Bavarians have already lost out on the DFL Supercup and the DFB Pokal cups. On the league front, they trail Leverkusen by eight points. In the Champions League, Lazio pulled a real scalp with a shock 1-0 victory in the first-leg of their round of 16 tie.
