Dan Burn’s tribute to the deaf community after Newcastle United’s win is pure gold

Newcastle United put a special feature on their shirt which was made as a tribute to deaf fans. The Magpies introduced the ‘sound shirt’, turning sound into touch using sensors and motors, known as haptic technology. 

The feature allows people to feel the atmosphere and the noise in the stadium, especially when Newcastle United get on the scoresheet. When The Magpies beat Tottenham Hotspur four goals to nil at St. James’ Park, Dan Burn did something touching for the deaf fans who attended the match.

Dan Burn’s tribute spreads love at St. James’ Park

The 31-year-old defender celebrated Alexander Isak’s goal with a gesture of hand-crossing, touching his chest and then concluded with a fist-shaking. It was read as ‘love the fans’ according to the British Sign Language. 

Burn demonstrated the celebration as a promise to some deaf fans prior to the game. This act has sparked appreciation on social media from some fans, thanking the Blyth-born for the initiative. 

It was Sela, one of the Newcastle sponsors, who was behind this campaign, including the sound shirt ideation. According to ITV, the Saudi-based entertainment organizer hoped the idea would bring inclusivity in football, especially the Premier League. 

“St James’ Park is renowned for its noise and passion,” said Sela’s executive Ibrahim Mohtaseb. “Through this initiative we hope to enable deaf fans and fans with hearing loss to feel a part of this.”

Newcastle moved to sixth on the table after beating Tottenham. The Magpies collected 50 points, having more goals productivity than Manchester United, who collected the same amount of points. Eddie Howe’s squad will travel to Selhurst Park on April 25, to face Crystal Palace to continue their mission of securing one European spot for next season.
