Liverpool Offered Premier League Star Anthony Gordon for £85m
New Manager Arne Slot Faces a Busy Summer
Liverpool are yet to make a splash in the summer transfer window but big moves could be on the horizon. With new manager Arne Slot taking over after Jurgen Klopp’s departure the club’s leadership is keen to provide him with the resources needed for a strong start.
The most notable transfer speculation involves Newcastle United winger Anthony Gordon. As the financial year ended Newcastle attempted to balance their books leading to intense rumours about Gordon’s potential move to Liverpool for £85 million.
Mixed Reports on Anthony Gordon
Conflicting reports have emerged about the short-lived transfer saga. According to GiveMeSport Newcastle offered Gordon to Liverpool for around £85 million.
Sources close to Liverpool confirmed that the opportunity to sign the 23-year-old was presented but the price was considered too high.
TalkSPORT’s Alex Crook, however, provided a different perspective, stating, “Liverpool asked about Gordon’s availability, but Newcastle stated the player was not for sale. That’s as far as it went.”
Gordon who had an impressive season and was described as “one of the best players in the Premier League” by Jamie Carragher was reportedly keen on returning to his boyhood club. But no progress was made and the deal stalled as the PSR deadline passed.
Gordon Transfer Saga Fizzles Out
As the new season approaches the chances of Liverpool signing Gordon seem slim. Although Newcastle are not in urgent need of funds and considers Gordon a crucial player for their squad.
With the transfer rumours slowing down it appears unlikely that Newcastle will entertain offers for him this summer.
While Liverpool have other attacking talents to focus on. Cody Gakpo’s impressive performance at Euro 2024 suggests that manager Slot may prioritize utilizing his existing squad.
But Liverpool remains an admirer of Gordon and any future interest will likely depend on a significant drop in his asking price.
The transfer window is still open and Liverpool fans can expect more activity as the club aims to strengthen under new leadership.
