Let’s take a look at some of these players in the UEFA Euro 2024 Player of the Tournament Rankings:
1. Jamal Musiala
The Bayern Munich star has shown massive improvement in recent years and has been excellent at Euro 2024 for hosts Germany. He scored a goal in their 5-1 demolition of Scotland before scoring again in their 2-0 win over Hungary. He was arguably not at his best in their draw against Switzerland but still created some decent chances.
Jamal Musiala is the joint top-scorer at the tournament so far and has also created 4 chances and completed 9 dribbles in three games. He has been a threat for Germany throughout and helped them reach the Round of 16.
2. Fabian Ruiz
Spain have been sensational at UEFA Euro 2024 and are the only team to have won all three of their games so far. Much of it has to do with their attack, including attacking midfielder Fabian Ruiz.
The Paris Saint-Germain star scored a goal and provided an assist in their comprehensive 3-0 win over Croatia in the first game. He was also brilliant in their 1-0 win over Italy before remaining on the bench in their win over Albania.
Ruiz has had 4 shots, created 4 chances, and completed 5 dribbles in 2 games so far. With the likes of Nico Williams and Lamine Yamal up front, Ruiz has run the show for Spain from midfield.
3. Ilkay Gundogan
The Barcelona veteran is always lauded for his intelligence on the pitch and it has been on full display for Germany at Euro 2024. With Toni Kroos sitting behind, Ilkay Gundogan has gotten the license to join the attack and he has been excellent.
The Manchester City legend put in a commanding display against Scotland before scoring and assisting a goal each in their win over Hungary. He couldn’t create a major impact against Switzerland but has been brilliant overall.
4. Kevin de Bruyne
While Belgium have had mixed results in their first two games, Kevin de Bruyne has been excellent in both. He produced an excellent performance against Serbia but they missed many chances, losing 1-0.
The captain then led from the front in their next game against Romania, scoring a goal in a 2-0 win. He won the Player of the Match award as well. De Bruyne has had 8 shots in two games and created seven chances.
Belgium are likely to reach the Round of 16 and if they progress further, De Bruyne’s form will be key.
5. Riccardo Calafiori
Very rarely does a defender gets a shout for the Player of the Tournament award but Italy’s Riccardo Calafiori has deserved it after their three group games.
He scored an unfortunate own goal in their 1-0 defeat against Spain but has been solid at the back overall. He put in a solid display against Albania in their opening game. He then put in another excellent performance in a 1-1 draw against Croatia. He also made an excellent run in the 98th minute and passed the ball to Mattia Zaccagni to score the equalizer against Vatreni.
Despite being a defender, he has created 4 chances in two games. Calafiori has, however, picked up two yellow cards and will miss Italy’s Round of 16 clash due to suspension.
