Dutch legend calls for German referee Felix Zwayer to be blacklisted after England’s controversial win over Netherlands
Netherlands legend Pierre van Hooijdonk wants referee Felix Zwayer to be blacklisted after his controversial decision in the England vs Netherlands tie sent the Dutch out of the Euro 2024 finals.
England sealed a 2-1 win over Netherlands on Wednesday night to seal their second consecutive European final on Sunday in Berlin. Xavi Simons gave the Dutch the lead with his long-range effort before Harry Kane converted a penalty after Denzel Dumfries attempted to block a shot from the England captain.
The penalty was not initially awarded but a VAR review resulted in referee Zwayer overturning his decision to award England a spot kick, which Harry Kane coolly converted. Ollie Watkins grabbed the late winner to seal the game for the Three Lions.
Why was Felix Zwayer asked to be blacklisted?
After the controversial penalty call, Netherlands captain Virgil van Dijk blasted the match officials for refusing to speak to the players after the final whistle.
Dutch legend Pierre van Hooijdonk who played for the national side in two European Championships was absolutely enraged with the decision.
“They (England) can thank Felix Zwayer. He really needs to be blacklisted. Terrible,” Van Hooijdonk told NOS.
“Also in the second half. A duel with Cody Gakpo where he simply blew his whistle again, ten metres from the linesman. Those are moments that were crucial in this match. Where England was much better in the first half, the Netherlands really had the better of the game in the second half. The Dutch team did not come in front of the opponent’s goal much, but it was balanced.
“We can talk about it at length, but if you’re going to award a penalty for this then you could end up with eight of them in the final. Really terrible.”
