Chelsea has confirmed the signing of Portuguese midfielder Renato Veiga

The 20-year-old defensive midfielder who can also play as a central defender has completed his move to Stamford Bridge from FC Basel in a deal worth £12m. The Portuguese midfielder has penned a seven-year contract with the West London giants.

Renato Veiga became the latest recruit for new Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca’s squad this summer. He has become Chelsea’s fifth signing of the 2024/25 summer window.

Veiga is expected to link up with Maresca’s squad for Chelsea’s pre-season which will commence against Wrexham in the United States on 25 July.

How has Renato Veiga reacted to his transfer?

A defensive midfielder by trade, Renato Veiga comes to Stamford Bridge with only two years of senior-level football under his belt and has become Chelsea’s latest addition to the young midfield setup.

Veiga has featured in all seven of the side’s European Championship qualifiers for the 2025 edition and was the captain of Portugal’s U-20s side. He has spent the majority of his early years in the Sporting youth ranks before being sold to Basel last season.

He made an immediate impact for the Swiss club and earned Basel’s Goal of the Season award when curled home an exquisite free-kick against FC Zurich. Veiga is delighted to have completed a move to one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.

“I’m absolutely buzzing to be here,” said Veiga.

“This is one of the biggest clubs in England – the biggest for me – and I’m just really excited to get started.”

Due to versatility, Veiga could be an interesting option to Marc Cucurella or Ben Chilwell as an inverted left-back.
