Why does Chelsea want Victor Osimhen?
The latest Premier League season is less than three weeks away as Chelsea prepare to get back into the elites having suffered a couple of horrible seasons. The team that once used to challenge the mighty powers of Europe is now steering down to survive amongst the elites of the league. While frequent changes in the club management are a big issue, the side has also failed to nail down a proper long-term replacement for Didier Drogba even after a decade. However, one person who comes close to solving that issue is Drogba’s fellow African player Victor Osimhen who is an initial target for Chelsea.
Why Chelsea needs Victor Osimhen?
Having splashed the cash on the likes of Álvaro Morata and Romelu Lukaku, later being a record deal, the club is yet to reap rewards and still is in search of a proper center forward. Osimhen, however, is a perfect fit for the side that fits the bill of the side. The Nigerian is a proven product in the top leagues of Europe, having already played in the French Ligue 1 and the Italian Serie A.
Osimhen’s age comes as a big factor in the investment for Chelsea as he is just 25 and still has a big career ahead of him. So far in his brief career he has scored 114 goals in 223 matches and has previously played in France for Lille between 2019 and 2021 before joining the Italian side. In three seasons with Napoli, he has scored 76 goals with 65 coming in Serie A during that period. The Nigerian has been highly successful in helping Napoli get back to the top of Italian football since joining in 2021.
The 25-year-old provides perfect cover for Chelsea in the striker position and will link up with Nicolas Jackson if required. His ability to finish and link up with the midfield provides a good substance for the West London side who will be delighted by the arrival of the player. He is currently on the radar of French side Ligue 1 who are ready to splash the cash.
On the flip side, his not getting included in the Napoli pre-season squad, has increased the speculations of his desire to leave the side. The striker will come at a hefty price for the West London outfit but could be an ideal player for the squad if they reach the Champions League next season.
