When will David Moyes leave West Ham United? Who will replace him?
Following the loss of Declan Rice last summer, fans and critics alike wondered how David Moyes and West Ham United would survive without a key midfield general. But despite bringing in several new faces including Edson Alvarez and Mohammed Kudus, the club have struggled. Instead, it has seen the Hammers’ concede a record number of goals (70) while failing to make up the difference on the other side.
Only Jarrod Bowen (16) has hit double figures in the Premier League with the next closest being Kudus (7), James Ward-Prowse, Michail Antonio, and Tomas Soucek (6). It has hurt the club as they currently sit 9th on the league table, five points behind 8th place Manchester United. That combined with a horrid run of form has seen the rumour mill indicate that the Hammers are already planning for life beyond David Moyes.
David Moyes to leave West Ham by mutual consent
The former Everton boss has spent the last four and a half years at the club and has taken the London side to new heights. That includes winning the Europa Conference League, the club’s first European trophy since 1965. However, reports had indicated that Moyes’ time in London was coming to an end with West Ham looking at Julen Lopetegui to replace him.
That has now been confirmed as the Hammers have released a statement confirming that David Moyes will leave the club at the end of the season. The 61-year-old had less than two months left on his current deal with the club and the statement confirmed that it won’t be renewed. The statement also added that the search for a successor is ongoing although no confirmation was given.
“West Ham United can confirm David Moyes will leave the Club by mutual consent at the end of the 2023/24 season when his contract expires,” reads the statement on West Ham’s official website.
“The recruitment process for David’s successor has begun. The Club will be making no further comment until a new appointment is confirmed.”
David Moyes delighted at the success he achieved with West Ham
The former Everton and Manchester United boss spent over four and a half-years at the club, leading them to successive top seven finishes. Not only that, the Scottish manager lead them to the Europa League quarter-finals this season, losing to Bayer Leverkusen. But the club’s struggles this season have seen them fail to perform and do so consistently in the league.
Yet despite that, Moyes admitted that he has thoroughly enjoyed his time with West Ham and believes that he has left the club in a stronger position than when he took the job. The 61-year-old also added that he wishes the club great success going forward and thanked the board for the chance to manage the club again.
“I have enjoyed four and a half brilliant years at West Ham, and the Club is in a stronger position than when I returned back in 2019. When I joined West Ham for a second time, the Club was one place above the relegation zone, and it has been a terrific journey to have achieved three consecutive seasons in Europe,” Moyes told the club’s official website.
“After leading the Club to safety, we guided the team to finishes of 6th and 7th in the Premier League, and I was delighted when we won the Europa Conference League title last June – the Club’s first major trophy in 43 years. I would like to thank all the players for their support, and all the success they have achieved, over the last four and a half years.
“I have really enjoyed working with everyone at West Ham, and I would like to thank the Board for giving me the opportunity to manage this great Club. I wish my eventual successor, the Directors, the players, the staff, the fans, and everybody at West Ham, all the very best for the future.”
