Bayer Leverkusen open enquiries to sign Girona’s Aleix García
With Girona mathematically confirmed to play Champions League football next season, it has many wondering just how Michel has managed to take a struggling side and turn it into this squad. The La Liga side finished 10th last season, their first back in the top tier, and have suddenly overachieved. That was despite the loss of key figures like Santiago Bueno and Oriol Romeu, with the latter a big loss.
But that was overcome with Aleix García stepping into Romeo’s role although it did take the additions of a few others to help ease that. Even then, the 26-year-old has thrived in his role as the deep-lying playmaker, even becoming the first Girona player ever to earn a call-up for the Spain national team. However, García’s rapid rise could go against the La Liga side as he has been heavily linked with a move away.
Aleix García one of several names on Bayer Leverkusen’s shortlist
Barcelona was prime amongst them in January but their financial issues combined with Girona’s refusal to budge on their €20 million asking price saw the move fall apart. But while the La Liga giants have maintained an interest, Fabrizio Romano has reported that Bayer Leverkusen are keen on signing him. The German side recently lifted their first Bundesliga crown and are looking to improve their squad.
Xabi Alonso and co are looking towards the future with the Spaniard keen on improving his side even further as they continue to battle for more trophies. That has reportedly led them to García and Romano has reported that the Bundesliga champions are the front-runners. They’ve only touched base with both García’s agent and Girona so far with no real moves made as of yet.
That could change in the near future but as per Ivan Quiros, the 26-year-old Girona midfielder is amongst several names on Leverkusen’s shortlist. The German outfit are keen on reinforcing their midfield before the start of next season and have thus shortlisted several names.
