West Ham United release statement after debutant George Earthy taken to hospital
With West Ham United facing Fulham after a tough mid-week clash against Bayer Leverkusen, many expected David Moyes to make wholesale changes to his side ahead of the second leg. However, while the Hammers’ boss did make a few changes, it wasn’t as many as many expected. But the biggest shock was the fact that young George Earthy was a part of the team.
The 19-year-old has thrived for West Ham’s U21 squad, making 20 appearances in the Premier League 2, contributing to 18 goals so far. That averages to a goal every 174 minutes for a squad that sit at the top of the Premier League 2 table, three points clear of Tottenham’s U21 side. The youngster eventually came off the bench in the 82nd minute but accidentally collided with team-mate Edson Alvarez.
George Earthy taken to hospital for assessment and to undergo treatment
The teenager went down hard and medical staff rushed onto the pitch to treat Earthy with many concerned for the young star’s health. He was eventually stretchered off after more than six minutes of treatment, including being given oxygen on the pitch. However, reports indicated that he was conscious on the way to the hospital for further assessment.
That was confirmed by David Moyes, in his post match press-conference, and West Ham also released a statement on Earthy which confirmed that they will issue an update in due time.
“West Ham United can confirm George Earthy will undergo an assessment in a London hospital this evening following the incident which saw him stretchered off during today’s Premier League fixture against Fulham. The midfielder – who entered the field as a second half substitute to make his Premier League debut against the Cottagers – was taken off in stoppage time,” reads the statement from West Ham on X.
Manager David Moyes said: “George has suffered a head injury. He’s awake and has been taken to hospital for further assessment.”
“West Ham United will provide a further update in due course.”
