West Brom vs Southampton: Championship Match Preview

The race for Premier League promotion is heating up as Southampton look to bounce back from their 3-1 defeat to Bristol City on Tuesday (Feb 13) evening. The Saints, one of the favourites to clinch an automatic promotion spot will look to get back on track when they face West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns on Friday. The contest will have plenty of bearings resting on it as the Midlands side looks to cement its place in the top six to at least guarantee a playoff berth for promotion.

The second half goals at the Ashton Gate were the difference-maker on Tuesday after the Saints lost their 35-match undefeated run. Conceding three goals against Huddersfield Town last week may have rang the alarm bells for the side, but the Saints will look to make sure they stay in the hunt and avoid back-to-back defeats.

Hosts West Brom are in a rich vein of form at home going into the match and have won all their last five matches. During this period, the Baggies have conceded only one goal which was scored by Blackburn Rovers. The battle in the Midlands will be interesting considering, West Brom has the third best defense in the Championship while Southampton have the second-best attack in the division.

Team News

Tom Fellows, John Swift, and Mikey Johnston’s spots are all in jeopardy, and Jed Wallace and Andreas Weimann could be called upon in the closing third. Grady Diangana and Semi Ajayi will be evaluated following their performances in the Africa Cup of Nations. While Kyle Bartley is still doubtful due to injury, Daryl Dike is once again sidelined for the long term, and Nathaniel Chalobah is a candidate to return to the midfield.

Following the loss at Ashton Gate, Martin will also likely make changes, maybe bringing in Stuart Armstrong, Ryan Fraser, and Sekou Mara for Southampton. Joe Aribo might be added to the substitutes’ bench following his Africa Cup of Nations service, and Che Adams is anticipated to be ready, while Flynn Downes is still doubtful for the fixture.
