Manchester City suffered double injury blow in their Champions League win over Copenhagen
Manchester City suffered two new injuries in their Champions League win over Copenhagen. Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva both went off during the match as Pep Guardiola’s injury woes deepened, threatening their Premier League title race.
In the 21st minute of their clash on Tuesday, Grealish went off with a groin problem. Another 12 minutes later, Silva sustained a knock to his ankle as City lost another key player, much to their chagrin.
The casualties followed as City were already without Josko Gvardiol, who wasn’t in the matchday squad. The Croatian was later revealed to have suffered an ankle injury too that ruled him out of their visit to the Danish capital. Now, all three players are facing a spell on the sidelines.
Speaking to the press after the match, Guardiola said:
“Jack felt his groin. I didn’t speak to the doctor, but it looks muscular. He wanted to continue but we can’t take any chances – and injuries like that usually take a few weeks. Bernardo took a big knock on the ankle. Hopefully, it is not a big issue, but we will see. Josko is out for two or three weeks after damaging the ligament in his ankle, but we hope Kova could come back to training on Thursday or Friday.”
Guardiola acknowledged that casualties during this time of the season is certainly detrimental in their bid for more titles as City are playing twice a week right now and have some big games coming up in the Premier League. He added, saying:
“Unfortunately, now with the schedule we have we need players fit and every game and training session we lose players and that is not good.”
Manchester City next play Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium in the Premier League on Saturday.
