Wayne Rooney puts an end to the Steven Gerrard vs Paul Scholes debate
The fans of English football may not have one mind about who is the best midfielder ever for their national team. The debate has always been circling around Premier League legends Frank Lampard, Paul Scholes, or Steven Gerrard. But lately, one legitimate person has shared his thoughts regarding the argument.
Wayne Rooney, who has played with all those three midfield legends both at the club and the national team said a quite surprising take. Despite playing for years alongside Scholes with Manchester United, the father of Kai said that there was one thing that made Gerrard better than the aforementioned.
What sets Gerrard and Scholes was legacy
In the latest episode of Sky Sports’ The Overlap, the United’s all-time top scorer gave his verdicts about those three legends.
“Stevie could come to Manchester United and be a top player and do what Scholes could do. But I don’t think Scholes could do what Stevie did at Liverpool,” Rooney told Neville. “Paul Scholes, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard are all different.
“As an all-rounder, Stevie is the best; he can defend, pass the ball, run, tackle, score goals, set pieces. As an all-rounder, he’s the best from that point of view.”
Rooney and Scholes played together for nine years, winning five Premier League titles in the process. Meanwhile, for Lampard and Gerrard, Rooney usually met them at the international stage when playing for England.
