“I was more than just a captain”- Vincent Kompany comments on coaching Leroy Sane at Bayern Munich
Newly-minted Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany has spoken about coaching Leroy Sane at Bayern Munich. Kompany was Manchester City’s captain when Sane played for the Premier League club. Hence, the duo are familiar with each other.
Sane played 135 games for City, scoring 39 goals and providing 43 assists, before leaving in 2020. He has since joined Bayern and is one of the Bavarians main players. Getting the best of Sane is crucial for Kompany to succeed. The Belgian is confident in doing so. He said (via Fabrizio Romano on X):
“At City, I was more than just a captain. So maybe things won’t be that different for Leroy than it was back then. He is a very talented player. My job is to get the best out of Leroy Sané – and every player. I won’t make any distinctions.”
Vincent Kompany arrives at Bayern Munich from Burnley. The clarets, however, were relegated from the Premier League this season. That said, Kompany’s style of play is well-respected. He focuses on building from the back and playing methodical football. The argument is that Burnley didn’t have the resources or players to play Kompany’s way. At Bayern, it’s a whole different story. The world is Kompany’s oyster.
