“Success will follow” – Vincent Kompany comments for the first time after being confirmed as Bayern Munich’s new boss
Vincent Kompany has been appointed Bayern Munich’s new manager and he’s excited to build a team at the Allianz Arena. The Belgian coach has signed a three-year deal with the Bundesliga giants after leaving Burnley following their relegation from the Premier League.
The 38-year-old gave his first interview since succeeding Thomas Tuchel and he made clear his desire to implement a possession-based style of play with the Bavarians. He said (via transfer expert Fabrizio Romano):
“As a coach, you have to stand for who you are as a person: I love having possession of the ball, being creative and we also have to be aggressive on the pitch and brave. I’m now looking forward to the most basic things: working with the players, building a team. When the foundation is in place, success will follow”.
Vincent Kompany will take charge of a wounded Bayern Munich side that finished trophyless last season. It was the first time since the 2011-12 campaign that German football’s most successful club has failed to pick up a trophy.
The former Manchester City captain will be tasked with halting Xabi Alonso’s remarkable reign at Bayer Leverkusen, which saw Die Werkself win the Bundesliga title unbeaten. The Belgian knows a few of Bayern’s squad from his playing days with Harry Kane and Eric Dier former opponents in the Premier League.
Bayern Munich heeded the advice of Vincent Kompany’s former manager Pep Guardiola
Bayern Munich board member Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has claimed the Bundesliga heavyweights asked Pep Guardiola for advice about Kompany before swooping for the former Anderlecht boss. The German said that their former manager had given a glowing verdict (via Romano):
“Pep Guardiola was also helping us with Kompany, he spoke very highly of Vincent as talented coach. Pep knows Vincent well and his opinion was really appreciated.”
Kompany played under Guardiola at the Etihad for three years and was the Spanish tactician’s captain. He won two titles while working with the only manager in history to win the continental treble in two separate countries.
The four-time Premier League champion learned a lot from his time with Guardiola including taking an inspiration for his possession-based style of play. It reaped benefits for Burnley in the 2022-23 campaign as they won the EFL Championship but the jury is out on the upcoming coach after their relegation this season. He oversaw 41 wins in 96 games in charge at Turf Moor.
