Club Deportivo Villarreal was founded in 1923 and played their first match against Castellon. They spent a lot of time in the lowest divisions of Spanish football before the Spanish Civil War.
Villarreal CF then started gaining promotion after the war finished in 1939 and then they changed their named to CF Villarreal, which is their current name. They saw multiple promotions and some demotions before eventually getting promoted to Spanish top-flight La Liga in 1998.

Villarreal CF Achievements
Villarreal have never won La Liga and their highest finish in the league came in the 2004-05 season when they finished third.
They have won three European trophies, though. They won two UEFA Intertoto Cups in 2003 and 2004. Their first major trophy came in the 2020-21 season when they won the UEFA Europa League, beating Manchester United in the final.
