Top 5 defenders to pick for Fantasy Premier League 2024/25 Gameweek 2

Fantasy Premier League or FPL returned with a bang last weekend, as the Premier League season began. As we enter Gameweek 2, let us look at some defenders who you should have in your team this week.

First let us look at last week’s results and the fixtures for this week. Manchester United secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Fulham, while Liverpool cruised to a 2-0 win over Ipswich Town. Brighton enjoyed a dominant performance, defeating Everton 3-0. Arsenal and Newcastle also started their campaigns with wins over Wolves and Southampton, respectively. There were draws between Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth, West Ham and Aston Villa, Leicester and Tottenham, and Brentford and Crystal Palace. However, Manchester City made a statement with a convincing 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Coming on to this weekend, the action continues. On Saturday, Brighton will host Manchester United, while Tottenham will face Everton. Crystal Palace will take on West Ham United, and Southampton will battle Nottingham Forest. Fulham will clash with Leicester City, and Manchester City will look to build on their strong start against Ipswich Town. Aston Villa will also aim for a victory against Arsenal. On Sunday, Wolverhampton Wanderers will host Chelsea, Bournemouth will face Newcastle United, and Liverpool will take on Brentford.

#1 Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold is the highest priced defender in the game and even at £7.0m looks a fine option this season. He wasn’t at his absolute best last season, as he only managed three goals and five assists in 25 starts culminating in a total 122 points.

This season, he has started very well with 8 points from the opening day and he easily could have had a couple of assists. He will hope to do more of the same against Brentford in GW 2.

#2 Rico Lewis

Rico Lewis, a promising young defender for Manchester City, has been making waves in the Premier League. His versatility, coupled with his solid defensive skills and attacking prowess, makes him a valuable asset for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Lewis’ ability to play both full-back and midfield positions offers tactical flexibility with ability to invert. He started ahead of Kyle Walker against Chelsea and managed 6 points and expect him to do the same against Ipswich in GW 2. Only 1.6% people in the game have him and he’s available for £4.5m.

#3 Cristian Romero

Last season in FPL, Spurs defender Cristian Romero scored five goals, which makes him a very valuable as an FPL asset. He also managed to get seven clean sheets and 15 bonus points.

In total, Romero managed a 107 points. He’s available for £5.0m this time and selected by 5.1% of the managers. In the first matchweek against Leicester, Spurs failed to get the clean sheet they expected and Romero only got 2 points. But the Argentine and his teammates will fancy not conceding against Everton in GW 2.

#4 Lewis Hall

Lewis Hall is currently looking like the best Newcastle defender, priced at £4.5m. He looks to be their first choice left-back judging by pre season lineups as well as the first league game against Southampton, where he returned 5 points.

The Magpies weren’t the best at the back last season, conceding 62 goals, but expect Hall’s attacking returns to make up for it. He is owned by 5% of the people playing FPL. Expect good returns from him in GW 2, as Newcastle face a Bournemouth side who have recently lost their star striker.

#5 Antonee Robinson

Antonee Robinson, the Fulham left-back, has become a reliable fixture in the Premier League and a valuable asset for FPL managers. His consistent performances, combined with his attacking prowess, make him a solid choice for your fantasy football squad. He’s a huge threat on the overlap and Fulham’s defence is generally solid so the points potential is very good.

This weekend, Fulham play Leicester so a clean sheet can be expected. The American costs £4.5 and has an ownership of 9.8%. In the opener against Manchester United, he returned 2 points.
