Thomas Muller ends his illustrious international career with Germany
German legend Thomas Muller has announced his retirement from international football following the conclusion of Euro 2024 on Monday. The Bayern Munich midfielder has represented Germany 131 times and has scored 45 goals in the process.
Muller was mostly used as a substitute at this summer’s European Championships in Germany and managed to play only 56 minutes over two games. He now brings the curtain down to a memorable 14-year international career where he helped Germany secure the 2014 World Cup.
He was also the Golden Boot winner in the 2010 World Cup with five goals to his name.
“After 131 national team games and 45 goals, I am saying goodbye,” Mueller said in a video statement announcing his decision.
“I was always proud to represent my country and I want to thank everyone,” he said. “I’m keeping my fingers crossed for the team on the way to the 2026 World Cup as a fan but no longer as a player on the pitch.”
Will Thomas Muller continue playing for Bayern Munich?
The German attacker announced his decision to retire from international football on all of his social media profiles on Monday. He was predominantly used as a substitute in the European Championships this summer.
Muller made a perfect start to his 2014 World Cup campaign with a hattrick against Portugal in Germany’s opening group game. His retirement means that manager Julian Nagelsmann will be without another veteran from the national side after Toni Kroos announced his retirement earlier this month.
Muller’s contract with Bayern runs down in the summer of 2025 and the German giants are yet to offer a contract extension to the German legend.
