Sergi Roberto played for Barca reserves in the 2009-10 season, making 29 appearances. In November 2010, he made his first senior appearance for Barcelona in a 5-1 win over Ceuta in the Copa del Rey.

He progressed well and made his UEFA Champions League debut in April 2011 in a 2-0 win over Real Madrid in the semi-final first leg. A month later, he made his La Liga debut as well, starting against Malaga in a 3-1 win. Roberto scored in a 4-0 win for Barcelona over BATE Borisov in the Champions League group stage in December that year.

Ahead of the 2015-16 season, Sergi Roberto was close to leaving as the club deemed him surplus to requirements. However, under manager Luis Enrique, he had a positional change as he played as a right-back instead of a midfielder. He also played as a left-back at times that season due to injury issues at the club.

In 2016, he provided two assists as a right-back in a 6-2 win over Real Betis in the first match of the campaign. In March 2017, he scored the winning goal for Barcelona in an iconic 6-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 second leg. Having trailed 4-0 from the first leg, they progressed to the next round emphatically.

Roberto signed a new contract of over three years in February 2018. He had to undergo surgery in 2021 for a quadriceps injury. He was rumored to be leaving the club in 2023 but signed a one-year extension. He captained the side and also scored four La Liga goals – his career best in a season.

International Career

Soon after joining Barcelona’s youth setup, Sergi Roberto was called up for Spain’s U17 side for the 2009 FIFA World Cup. He scored a hat-trick against Burkina Faso in November as Spain eventually finished in third place.

Roberto then featured for the Spain U21 side during the 2013 U21 European Championship qualifiers. He made his senior debut on March 27 in a friendly against Cluj-Napoca.

Roberto’s last appearance for Spain came back in 2021 as he played just seven minutes in a 2-1 win over Italy in the UEFA Nations League semi-finals. They lost the final 2-1 against France and Roberto didn’t feature in the game.

Style of Play

Sergi Roberto is primarily a midfielder but has also often operated as a fullback. He has also played in multiple positions and roles in midfield itself under different managers.

The Spaniard is known for his immense work rate and strength. He also has a decent pace and good passing ability. His best position, arguably, is a box-to-box midfielder, though.

Luis Enrique, under whom Roberto transitioned to right-back and played multiple other positions, once said about the Spaniard:

“In a team like ours, except in goal, he could play in any position, it’s no surprise. The most difficult thing is doing it well all over the field and Sergi Roberto does that.”
