3 reasons why Chelsea and Enzo Maresca could emerge as a perfect match
Chelsea are set to appoint Enzo Maresca as Mauricio Pochettino’s replacement. The Argentine has been surprisingly sacked and Maresca is set to succeed him. The 44-year-old is relatively inexperienced in managing at the top level.
He has so far managed less than 70 top-flight matches, 53 in English football. Hence, some have expressed surprise at Maresca’s appointment. However, those who know Maresca, are excited to see what he does at Chelsea.
The Italian was Pep Guardiola’s assistant at Manchester City. His football reflects Guardiola’s philosophies. The Blues want a coach who can mold the team into a possession-dominant one. That’s exactly what Enzo Maresca does.
Apart from that, there’s also a similarity with Guardiola in how Maresca uses his full-backs. He uses inverted full-backs and found tremendous success at Leicester City with his tactics. The Foxes finished the Championship season with an eye-watering 97 points. Maresca, however, won’t be guiding the team in the Premier League.
He is now set to be in charge of Chelsea. Maresca is expected to pen a five-year-long deal. Given the players at Chelsea’s disposal and their youth Arsenal, Maresca could transform the Blues into a force to be reckoned with in the coming years.
The youths started showing their promise at the end of the Pochettino stint. Maresca’s tactical acumen could help them fulfill their potential.
Cole Palmer set to be Chelsea’s focal point under Enzo Maresca
Enzo Maresca is reportedly planning to make Cole Palmer the focal point of his Chelsea side. As per The Times, the Italian intends to play a 4-3-3 formation, with Palmer as the focal point. Chelsea’s strategy was similar under Mauricio Pochettino.
Maresca has also worked with Palmer during his Manchester City stint. Hence, the duo are familiar to each other. Palmer could be set for added responsibility after a sensational first season at Stamford Bridge.
