Why did Ryan Porteous receive a red card in the Germany vs Scotland game?
Everything went from bad to worse for Scotland in the opening game of Euro 2024. Playing against the host Germany, Steve Clarke’s squad had to deal with attack after attack of the opponents.
Germany had already led by two goals inside 30 minutes after Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala found the back of Scotland’s net. The situation causes frustration for Scotland players, including Ryan Porteous.
Ryan Porteous Red Card: Scotland Defender Sent Off in EURO 2024 Clash
The Watford centre-half was trying to stop Germany’s attack on the edge of the first half, but he ended up fouling Ilkay Gundogan so badly. Porteous launched a two-legged tackle to the Barcelona player.
The referee showed a red card to Porteous after checking the VAR. The challenge was so hard that Gundogan had to be taken care of by the medics. Porteous is the first player to be sent off on his Euro debut since Austria’s Aleksandar Dragovic in 2016. Specifically for this tournament edition, he was the first to be shown a red card.
That was a straight red card which made him miss the next game. Scotland were trailing three goals to nil on the break after Kai Havertz converted from the spot. With only 10 men on the pitch, it is unlikely for Scotland to do a comeback miracle.
