Ralf Rangnick reflects on his ‘open heart operation’ comments of Manchester United
Former Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick had doubled down on his honest assessment of the club made two years ago. Rangnick, who currently manages the Austrian national team oversaw a brief spell as an interim Man Utd manager.
Before leaving United after a disastrous short spell, the Austrian manager claimed that the club needed “open heart surgery” amid concerns over the playing squad. Rangick was expected to move into the club’s boardroom at the end of the 2021/22 season.
After two years, United now run by the INEOS group still has the same problems despite splashing out £205m in the summer window. The problems have spread into the new campaign with two defeats against Brighton and Liverpool.
Ralf Rangnick believes he was correct on his Manchester United analysis
Erik ten Hag managed to keep the job this summer due to the club’s FA Cup triumph against neighbours Manchester City at Wembley. Many United fans agreed with Rangnick’s assessment from two years ago and in a recent interview, the Austrian claimed that United’s last two turbulent years only served as a testament to his claim.
“I probably made that statement when the season was almost over about two years ago,” Rangnick told TV2. “It is probably only two or three weeks since Erik ten Hag was asked the same thing. Then he said that I was right in my analysis. I don’t know how many players they have signed since, but it looks like I was right.
“Before I left for Manchester, I had a long and thorough talk with Solskjaer, two hours in fact. But there is no point in going into detail, it was a long time ago and is not exciting. But I am coach for Austria now and am not close enough to United to assess the status there.”
Man United will travel to Southampton when the Premier League returns this weekend.
