Phil Foden has left the England squad due to “family matters”, set to return for the last-16 clash
He’s apparently going for the birth of his third child…
England star Phil Foden has reportedly left the national team’s camp and returned to the UK for the birth of his third child. He is expected to return in time for their round of 16 clash, which is scheduled for Sunday, confirmed FA.
Manchester City started in all three of their group fixtures as the Three Lions won Group C but he didn’t score or assist even once. Like many others in the squad, Foden too has flattered to deceive at the Euro 2024 so far.
The 24-year-old hasn’t been able to carry his club form onto the international stage. He scored 27 goals for City throughout the 2023-24 season in all competitions, his best for the side yet, as Foden helped them win the Premier League for the fourth season in a row.
A spokesperson of FA said about his departure:
“Phil Foden has temporarily left the England camp and returned to the UK for a pressing family matter.”
Foden hasn’t hit the throttle yet, and even come under sharp criticism for his performances, but given his talents, he remains a valuable member of the England squad.
England will learn their last-16 opponents today
As things stand, England could face a tough fixture against the Netherlands in the round of 16, although it could change following tonight’s games. Either way, their opponents will be confirmed today. Having progressed as Group D winners, Gareth Southgate’s side will face the third-placed team in Group D or E.
