Paraguay Sacks Coach After Copa America 2024 Woes
A dismal performance by Paraguay in Copa America 2024 led to coach Daniel Garnero’s sacking. The Paraguayan Football Association (APF) announced the decision on Monday which ended Garnero’s brief tenure.
A Series of Defeats
Paraguay faced a tough run in the tournament. They started with a 2-1 loss to Colombia but things got worse with a 4-1 defeat by Brazil. The campaign ended with a 2-1 loss to Costa Rica which led to their early exit from the tournament.
Garnero’s Short Stint
Daniel Garnero who took over in September 2023 had a challenging time. His team scored just five goals and conceded 13 in ten matches. Paraguay have also struggled in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers as they are in seventh place with five points from six games.
While the APF is yet to name a successor so Paraguay are without any head coach at the moment.
Paraguay’s next qualifiers are in September 2024. They will play against Uruguay away and Brazil at home as the team faces a tough road ahead in their World Cup journey. It looks like they need to pull out some upsets to go all the way to the FIFA World Cup 2026 which will be hosted by Canada, Mexico, and the Copa America 2024 host United States.
