What time Nigeria vs Ivory Coast AFCON Final will kick off?
The stage for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations finals is set, as Nigeria and Ivory Coast lock horns in the showpiece clash on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe in Abidjan to decide the winner.
Three-time champions Nigeria are in their first AFCON final since they became champions in 2013, and winning the title once again on the weekend will put them among the top three most successful sides in the tournament’s history, with only Ghana (4), Cameroon (5) and Egypt (7) being African champions on more occasions.
Meanwhile, the hosts Ivory Coast are gunning for their third title in the competition, having last won in 2015. The Elephants can also become the first side to win the trophy on home turf since Egypt, 18 years ago.
Interestingly, Nigeria and Ivory Coast had locked horns in the group stages of the ongoing AFCON tournament, with the Super Eagles pulling off a slender 1-0 victory on matchday two. William Troost-Ekong scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot in the 55th-minute.
Since progressing from their group, both sides have carved an impressive journey to reach here. Nigeria beat Cameroon (2-0) in the round of 16, before seeing off Angola (1-0) and then South Africa on penalties. Ivory Coast ousted reigning champions Senegal with a 5-4 penalty shootout win in the last-16, then beat talented Mali (2-1) in the quarter-finals, before defeating the tournament’s surprise package, DR Congo (1-0) in the semi-finals.
