MLS All-Star Game to Host Liga MX for Third Time in Four Years
The upcoming Major League Soccer (MLS) All-Star Game is set to showcase a showdown between the best of MLS and Liga MX for the third time in four years, MLS revealed on Monday.
Scheduled for July 24 at Columbus, Ohio’s Lower.com Field, this year’s exhibition match marks a return to the MLS vs. Liga MX format after last year’s encounter with Arsenal.
Expressing excitement about the collaboration, Camilo Durana, MLS’ Executive Vice President of Properties and Events, highlighted the successful partnership between the two leagues.
He emphasized the intensity and competition witnessed in previous MLS vs. Liga MX matchups, stating that the return of Liga MX teams for the All-Star Game is highly anticipated.
MLS has maintained an undefeated record against Liga MX, securing victories in the 2021 and 2022 All-Star Games. The strong partnership between the leagues extends beyond the All-Star Game, encompassing tournaments like the Leagues Cup and the Campeones Cup.
Durana also hinted at the possibility of future MLS All-Star Games featuring Liga MX teams, citing the success of the Leagues Cup in promoting collaboration and showcasing talent from both leagues.
Following the All-Star Game, the Leagues Cup tournament is scheduled to commence on July 26, featuring clubs from both MLS and Liga MX.
Additionally, the Campeones Cup later this year will see MLS Cup champions Columbus Crew hosting the Liga MX Campeon de Campeones winners.
MLS’ All-Star roster selection will involve fan voting, coach selection, and picks by MLS Commissioner Don Garber. Details regarding Liga MX’s roster are yet to be announced.
In addition to the All-Star Game, a Skills Challenge is set to take place on July 23, where both leagues will vie for supremacy with each boasting one win apiece in the challenge.
