Messi and Martínez Shine as Argentina Thrashes Guatemala 4-1
Argentina’s Strong Copa America Warm-Up
Argentina warmed up for the Copa America with a convincing 4-1 victory over Guatemala at FedEx Field in Maryland. Lionel Messi and Lautaro Martínez each scored twice showcasing their readiness for the upcoming tournament. This match was a crucial part of Argentina’s preparation and the team looked sharp and focused.
Messi played 35 minutes in Argentina’s narrow 1-0 win over Ecuador on Sunday although he had a challenging season plagued by injuries. He appeared fresh, determined and eager to lead his team against Canada in their Copa America opener next Friday.
Messi and Martínez Lead the Charge
Guatemala surprised everyone by taking an early lead. However, Messi quickly equalized with his first goal at the 12-minute mark. He later scored his second goal in the 77th minute demonstrating his skill and resilience.
Messi also assisted in another goal and came close to a hat trick with a free kick hitting the woodwork. Currently, he is tied with Ali Daei both having scored 108 international goals. Cristiano Ronaldo remains the top scorer with 130 goals in 207 games.
After the game, Messi told TYCSports,
We are going to continue putting in the effort and trying to win, as always. Winning again is increasingly difficult, but we are going to try again.
Lautaro Martínez also had a decent performance converting a penalty in the 39th minute and scoring another goal with Messi’s assistance. Ángel Di María contributed as well helping Messi deliver the final blow.
Looking Ahead to the Copa America
Fans have high expectations from Argentina as they are the current holders of the Copa America title. Much of the responsibility will fall on the 36-year-old Messi to lead the way in the tournament. Messi opted out of the Paris Olympics focusing on adding another Copa America title to his achievements.
Looking towards the future Messi has not ruled out playing in the 2026 FIFA World Cup. He will be 38 when the tournament begins and turning 39 during the event. For now, his sights are set on leading Argentina to success in the Copa America.
