Can Trent Alexander-Arnold Shine in England’s Midfield at Euro 2024?

From Right-Back to Midfield: A New Challenge

Trent Alexander-Arnold is preparing for a new role with England at Euro 2024. Known for his skills as a right-back for Liverpool Alexander-Arnold is set to play in midfield. This change comes after years of mixed experiences with the national team.

While Alexander-Arnold has only made 25 appearances for England since his debut in 2018. Injuries and competition at right-back have limited his playtime. He played just 111 minutes in major tournaments for England all in low-pressure situations. Now he has a chance to start against Serbia in England’s opening game and that too potentially in midfield alongside Declan Rice.

England’s coach Gareth Southgate has been experimenting with Alexander-Arnold in midfield. This isn’t a sudden decision. Alexander-Arnold has played in central midfield in five of his last six starts for England and also earned man of the match twice. These matches were against lower-ranked teams but Southgate is optimistic about the potential.

Alexander-Arnold’s early years at Liverpool’s academy saw him play as a midfielder. Coaches saw his vision and passing skills perfect for the role.

However, he became a right-back to break into the first team faster. His creativity from the right has been key for Liverpool, but England’s style of play is different. This has led Southgate to reconsider his role.

High Hopes for Euro 2024

Southgate believes Alexander-Arnold can make a significant impact in midfield. England’s group includes Serbia, Denmark, and Slovenia offering a good test for his new role. Southgate has said,

We’re going to be trialing it when we haven’t seen it in a really high-level game. So we’ll just have to see where we can go with it.

Alexander-Arnold is eager for this opportunity. After spending years on the sidelines he feels ready to contribute more directly to the team.

His ability to deliver precise long-range passes could be a game-changer for England.
