Mauricio Pochettino admits that his Chelsea squad is “not mature enough to compete in every three days”

Chelsea have just earned their third draw in the last five league games, the latest coming at Bramall Lane after being held by Sheffield United. After the match, Blues manager Mauricio Pochettino spoke about his team’s ability to cope with a congested schedule.

The Argentinian doubts that his own squad is ready to compete physically and mentally against other Premier League contestants. For the last three games, The Blues have played in a span of less than a week from each match to another and its the reason why Pochettino made such a controversial statement regarding his team.

“It’s about to be competitive and maybe I repeat too much but watching football like us, 52-years-old, you identify really quick whether the team is ready to compete or not,” Poch said. “Maybe this group is not mature enough to compete in games every three days.”

Mauricio Pochettino believes that his players are tired

Pochettino admitted that his players were exhausted and were at risk of suffering injuries. However, the former Southampton manager said that winning a game has nothing to do with being exhausted.

“Of course they were tired,” he added. “But that is not an excuse today to not win the game in the end. They can be tired, of course, that is why we have an unbelievable training centre to provide everything.

“We tried adapting the situation with different players and different situations on the pitch. The team is not showing in the last few months the capacity to be solid. We score goals but we are conceding and that is why they punish us.”
