Mason Mount Injury: Midfielder set to return ahead of Liverpool clash

Manchester United will be handed a major boost in their FA Cup quarterfinal clash against Liverpool as last summer’s signing Mason Mount is set to return to the squad. Mount, one of the high-profile signings in the 2023 summer transfer window has been sidelined for the last four months due to a calf issue. However, with one of the important games in Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United reign taking place on Sunday at Old Trafford, Mount’s return will be a major boost.

Mason Mount to return to the squad soon

Having last played against Luton Town on November 11, Mount has missed action since the turn of the year but could now give his side a big boost. United are sweating on the fitness of star man Rasmus Hojlund while Antony Martial remains a long-term absentee. Antony is yet to find his form for the Red Devils this term. While it is unclear whether he is ready to start or not, he strengthens the bench for United in a fixture that could seal Erik ten Hag’s future.

Mount’s availability will also be a good sign for him ahead of the upcoming Euro 2024 as he tries to regain his spot in the England team. His injury has seen him out of favour of the national side but could give Gareth Southgate a good headache to have ahead of the marquee event.

Sunday’s fixture against Liverpool will be the 19th time these two teams go head-to-head in the FA Cup. United dominate the head-to-head with 10 wins in 18 while Liverpool have just four FA Cup wins against their arch-rivals.

Decisive week for Champions League qualification

United, not in action over the weekend in the Premier League due to FA Cup commitments could find themselves out of reckoning for Champions League qualification if Spurs and Aston Villa win on the weekend. A defeat for Ten Hag and his army against a boosted Liverpool side could have huge consequences.

FA Cup exit would mean the backdoors to qualify for Europe will be closed and the season will end without silverware for Manchester United. A barren season coupled with an inconsistent run in the Premier League and Champions League could seal the fate of Ten Hag at the end of the season.

Defenders Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia will not be part of the squad for Sunday’s game with all injured. United currently are without a recognised left-back which has forced them to fill the void using utility players.
