Manchester City Await Verdict on 115 FFP Charges Amid Everton and Nottingham Forest Penalties
In the midst of a tumultuous Premier League season marked by unprecedented sanctions, Manchester City finds itself at the centre of scrutiny as the league deliberates over alleged breaches of Financial Fair Play (FFP) regulations.
Manchester City to Face FFP Charges?
While Everton and Nottingham Forest have already faced penalties this season for violations of profit and sustainability rules, Manchester City’s case looms large, encompassing a staggering 115 charges spanning the period between 2009 and 2018.
Premier League’s chief executive Richard Masters emphasized the unique nature of City’s investigation compared to the cases of Everton and Forest.
Both clubs received points deductions—10 for Everton (reduced to six after appeal) and four for Forest. However, City’s situation is distinct due to the breadth and complexity of the charges against them.
A date for City’s hearing has been set, reportedly scheduled for later in 2024, though speculation suggests it may extend into early 2025. Masters underscored the gravity of the charges faced by City, refraining from divulging further details but affirming the progress of the proceedings.
The charges against Manchester City were made public in February 2023, alleging a failure to provide an accurate portrayal of the club’s financial standing.
This isn’t the first instance of financial scrutiny for City, having previously faced a UEFA ban in 2020, later overturned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The 10-Point Deduction
The recent penalties imposed on Everton and Nottingham Forest—November 2023 saw Everton’s 10-point deduction reduced to six points in February this year, while Forest faces a relegation battle following a four-point deduction—underscore the gravity of financial irregularities within the league.
With City’s case taking a markedly different trajectory, the club has enlisted the expertise of top lawyer Lord Pannick to mount a robust defense. Pannick, renowned for his legal acumen, brings a wealth of experience to City’s defense, having represented prominent figures in the past.
As the saga unfolds, City’s fate hangs in the balance, highlighting the ongoing efforts to uphold financial integrity within English football amidst a backdrop of legal complexity and strategic manoeuvring.
