“Leader”, “second rate”, Manchester United legends share mixed reactions on Matthijs de Ligt

The big-money signing of Matthijs de Ligt is drawing contrasting views from Manchester United club legends. Former Ajax, Juventus, and Bayern Munich defender De Ligt has arrived at Manchester United for a multi-million Euros deal, deal official now. But not all are happy with this move.

Two club legends Paul Scholes and Teddy Sheringham held completely distinct viewpoints on this decision by the Erik ten Hag coached side. Former midfield maestro Scholes raised his concerns on the big money deal as the defender was benched for Eric Dier and didn’t get much game time while representing Bayern.

As per media outlet Mirror, Scholes referred to the newly joined as a “second-rate” stopper, as according to him, Juventus “got rid of him” as he wasn’t good for them and also added that Bayern Munich must have had similar issues too.

Rio Ferdinand, who spent 12 years at Old Trafford also raised doubts, saying that the defender had a lot of injuries and still the club spent 45-50 million Euros on him. He also said that there will be a lot of pressure and opportunities for the Dutchman but seeing the past two seasons, he doesn’t anticipate much.

Teddy Sheringham however had contrasting views compared to his teammates. He claimed that Matthijs de Ligt is needed in the squad as the side requires “leaders’. He took the side of the newbie, saying De Ligt has cliched titles in the Netherlands, Italy, and Germany.

Sheringham also said that De Ligt will drag the players with him. He also drew reference to Ten Hag making De Ligt the youngest captain of Ajax in the past. The former striker also praised Lisandro Martinez.
