Mallorca vs Real Sociedad Match Preview

Mallorca and Real Sociedad face off at the Estadio Mallorca Son Moix on Tuesday in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi-finals. For the first time since the 2008-09 season, Mallorca have reached the last-four and will be hoping to make it to the showpiece clash after 21 years, whereas Sociedad have got thus far for the first time since clinching the trophy in the 2019-20 season.

With just two wins from their last five games, Mallorca isn’t particularly in their best shape right now. It’s worth noting that both their wins have come in the Copa del Rey, including a stunning 3-2 defeat of the high-flying Girona in the quarter-finals. Since then, the Pirates have lost 1-0 to Real Betis in La Liga, followed by a 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Athletic Bilbao in the competition, on Saturday.

Real Sociedad haven’t exactly covered themselves in glory either, winning just one of their last five league matches. Following a purple patch in the last few days of January, where La Real won thrice in a row, Imanol Alguacil’s side have drawn 0-0 with Rayo Vallecano and Girona, both in La Liga.

Mallorca’s league form in 2024 has continued to disappoint, with Los Pirates failing to win any of their five top-flight matches. Their most recent outing ended in a crushing 4-0 loss to Athletic Bilbao. Javier Aguirre’s side have only seen wins in the cup as Mallorca have beaten Burgos, Tenerife and most notably, Girona, to reach here.

By contrast, Real Sociedad have lost just once since the turn of the year, a 2-1 defeat away to Athletic Bilbao in the league, although their last two games have ended in a pair of goalless stalemates. La Real have faced no upsets in their cup games, thus far, overcoming Malaga, Osasuna and Celta Vigo.

Mallorca: Pablo Maffeo is nursing a knee injury and will hence sit out of the clash whereas Vedat Muriqi is still recovering from a prolonged absence. Cyle Larin has scored in their last three Copa del Rey games and will be leading the line once again, with Abdon Prats in support. Prats was their hero in the last round with a sensational first-half brace against Girona.

Real Sociedad: The Basque Country outfit is blighted by a host of injuries right now as Alvaro Odriozola, Kieran Tierney, Sheraldo Becker, Aihen Munoz, and Carlos Fernandez are all sidelined from the clash. Meanwhile, Takefusa Kubo was away at the 2023 AFC Asian Cup with Japan, whereas Hamari Traore had international commitments with Mali for the 2023 African Cup of Nations. Both sides are out of their respective competitions, but Kubo and Traore remain doubts for the clash. Even if the players are back in the mix, head coach Javier Aguirre will be cautious against throwing them in the deep end.
