Liverpool vs Tottenham Player Ratings as Elliott scores, Gakpo excellent, and Richarlison better

Arsenal beat Bournemouth 3-0, Manchester City thrashed Wolves 5-1 and it meant that if Liverpool FC wanted to keep hope alive, they needed to beat Tottenham. Yet it was the tale of misery and company between Spurs and the Reds with both sides on the wrong end of the form chart. The North Londoners have hit a plateau of sorts while the Reds have simply fallen off the field.

Yet for those who watched that game, few would say that Liverpool were the side that dropped 10 points over their last five games. The Reds ran away with a 2-0 lead before half-time with Spurs being dragged and tortured all over the field by the home side. That should have changed after half-time but it didn’t as Klopp’s side added two more, and should have added four before Spurs finally did something.

They managed to put two goals in the back of Alisson’s net, showing the world an angry Alisson as the Brazilian berated his defense for giving away yet another clean sheet. But in the end, Spurs lacked the energy and enthusiasm to pull off another comeback, as the Reds walked away with all three points for now. They also had all the fun and handed Ange Postecoglou a few more questions to ask from his side. Here are the Liverpool vs Tottenham Player Ratings:

Liverpool Player Ratings

Alisson Becker: 5

Had very very very little to do in the first half as Tottenham took just one shot by the end of the first half. Then, something hit Spurs after the fourth goal flew in and the Londoners had 11 shots, put seven on target, and scored twice and Alisson should have done better for both. His defense should have done better too and it was probably why he was so angry.

Trent Alexander-Arnold: 6

His assists didn’t quite turn up but Trent Alexander-Arnold ruled the game with three pre-assists and yes, that’s something. The right-back has struggled for form but turned up well even if his defending wasn’t up to the mark tonight.

Jarrel Quansah: 6

Against a proper “Big Six” opponent, this was a proper Rolls-Royce performance from Jarrel Quansah even if Richarlison did put an end to the clean sheet. The young defender has played consistently thanks to injuries and has stepped up his performances game in, game out. He took it a notch up against Spurs, pinging passes and winning tackles with the confidence of a far more experienced defender.

Virgil van Dijk: 5

Poor defensive performance from a defender is regarded to be amongst the best. He had little to do in the first half but still managed to give away a few passes but the second half was the real problem. Once Spurs got going, very late, Van Dijk struggled to deal with everything thrown at him and could have even given away a penalty. Had Alisson angry at the fact that they conceded twice.

Andrew Robertson: 7

A proper Andy Robertson performance from the Scottish left-back as he bombarded up and down the field like a man on fire, with more than half a dozen runs into the box. That was eventually rewarded as he was handed an empty goal to tap in Salah’s saved shot into the net.

Harvey Elliot: 9

Going into the game, only Mohamed Salah needed a good performance more than Harvey Elliot and boy did the young starlet produce. He ran rings around the Tottenham team, so much so that they were pretty sure that Elliot had used a shadow clone jutsu to be everywhere all at once. They simply couldn’t stop him and it was a joy to watch as he ran that Liverpool offense, even scoring a screamer and assisting another.

Wataru Endo: 6

A solid performance at the base of midfield, Jurgen Klopp should have nothing but praise for the Japanese international’s performance tonight. He kept the ball ticking, kept the Spurs contingent quiet whenever he had the chance to and did his bit defensively.

Alexis Mac Allister: 6

Ran the midfield and kept the ball ticking for large parts of the game but it wasn’t his best showing in a Liverpool shirt.

Mohamed Salah: 8

He walked into the game with off the field controversies fuelling rumours of an exit and in the worst form of his life but life handed him Emerson Royal. For 60 minutes, Salah ran the full-back ragged, treated him like a training cone and should have probably had a hattrick. That includes missing a POINT BLANK OPEN GOAL SHOT because he decided to poke it harmlessly wide. He probably felt sorry for Spurs.

Cody Gakpo: 7

Arguably the best performance from a player playing striker for Liverpool in quite some time with the Dutch international leading the line rather well. Not only that, he dove-tailed superbly with Diaz and Salah, swapping positions at will and causing more problems for the Spurs’ backline.

Luis Diaz: 6

Unlike the other two forwards, Diaz couldn’t quite get on the score-sheet but did do his best to provide a threat whenever he was on the ball.

Substitutes:

Joe Gomez: 5

Was sent on to give Andy Robertson a rest but wasn’t up to the mark defensively and should have done better dealing with the two goals.

Stefan Bajcetic: 6

Did his best after a season-long injury absence but couldn’t impact the game as much as he hoped.

Darwin Nunez: 5

Replaced Luis Diaz but never really offered too much off a threat as Liverpool had eased off the pedal after he walked on.

Ryan Gravenberch: 5

Did his best to keep the ball moving and create chances for his side but Liverpool had already taken their step off the pedal, leaving there little to do for the Dutch midfielder.

Dominic Szoboszlai:  N/A

Sent on to add fresh legs to the game and offer an attacking option going forward, which he did well enough.

Tottenham Player Ratings

Guglielmo Vicario: 3

He could do absolutely nothing about Harvey Elliot’s goal (the fourth) and Andy Robertson’s goal (the second) but Vicario should have done much much better to stop Salah’s and Gakpo’s headers (the first and third). Yet, maybe the goalkeeper shouldn’t be facing more than 20 shots which means questions need to be asked of the defenders.

Pedro Porro: 5

The best of the Tottenham full-backs but when the other performed that badly, saying that seems like an insult. Still, Porro was a constant threat down his flank, took his side’s only shot of the first half and kept Luis Diaz so quiet that he was eventually replaced.

Cristian Romero: 5

Started well and did well to keep both Gakpo and Salah at bay before everything went down the drain and Romero, plus the rest of his defense, struggled to deal with everything. They were completely out of sync all off a sudden with Romero arguably the least worst of the lot.

Micky van de Ven: 4

Made his share of blocks and tackles, even stopping a goal-bound shot or two but the defender wasn’t quite the imposing figure he showcased when he first arrived. Something needs to change for Ange and that does include offering his defenders more support.

Emerson Royal: 2

There are bad performances, there are horrible performances and then there’s this. Royal negated everything his side could have done by losing Salah for the first goal, the second goal, lost the ball, Salah and Elliot for the third. He was eventually replaced 60 minutes into the game and it should have been done 30 minutes into the game.

Rodrigo Bentancur: 5

Started off rather well by playing a triple role as creator, destroyer and box-to-box presence before Liverpool stepped up and effectively shut him down. Wataru Endo played a key role in that defensively but defensively, for Tottenham, the Uruguayan was all over the field and did little to stop the onslaught.

Yves Bissouma: 4

Off all three midfielders, Yves Bissouma’s performance was perhaps the worst with the midfielder losing his head in the second half, flinging the ball away and talking dissent to the referee. He earnt a yellow card for that but perhaps his energy may have been better concentrated on winning the ball.

Pape Matar Sarr: 4

He started brightly, making darting runs into the final third and looked rather good on the ball before it all fell apart across the board. His tackles no longer won the ball, his passes went haywire and his pocket got picked several times and he earnt a yellow before Lo Celso eventually replaced him.

Brennan Johnson: 4

A poor performance from the Welshman all altogether, but things did pick up after Richarlison walked onto the field even for Johnson. He could have done better here and there but it was too little, too late.

Heung-Min Son: 6

Until the 60th minute, Son was the worst Tottenham forward on the field. He struggled to deal with Van Dijk and Quansah, who did well to marshall him, but that changed after Richarlison arrived. The shift to the left-wing saw the South Korean threaten more, score once and show what Spurs lacked.

Dejan Kulusevski: 5

Much like most of his side, Dejan Kulusevski has struggled for form off late and that showed quite a bit tonight with the Swede lacking his usual directness and incisiveness. He was eventually replaced by Richarlison.

Substitutes:

James Maddison: 6

Proved to the world why he is so important to this Spurs side, as things completely changed after Maddison and Richarlison stepped onto the field. The Englishman ran the game for 30 minutes and in that time he created a few chances for his side and turned up the offense dial to ten. It’s good that he’s fit again for Ange.

Oliver Skipp: 6

Did his part in midfield but Skipp was mainly sent on to replace the ineffective Emerson Royal.

Richarlison: 7

The best Tottenham player on the field tonight and he only played 37 minutes. And yet, the Brazilian offered Spurs a target, scored with his first shot and assisted Son to give his side hope. That hope quickly faded away but the fact that Richarlison might be the striker they need, has not.

Giovani Lo Celso: 5

Sent on to add a touch of creativity and progressive passing, Lo Celso did that when called upon.
