Ed Sheeran emotional after Ipswich Town secures promotion to top tier after 22 years
Following Leicester City, Leeds United and Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League at the end of the 2022/23 season, few gave any other teams a chance of the two direct promotion places. The squads the three sides had in their possession combined with the bigger budgets available put everyone else at a disadvantage. Yet that never seemed to matter for Ipswich Town over the course of the season.
The Tractor Boys were in their first season back in the Championship after being promoted from the League One following their relegation at the end of the 2018/19 season. It meant that few gave Ipswich Town a chance of finishing amongst the top six, let alone in a direct promotion spot. But Kieran McKenna has worked wonders with his squad and Ipswich rarely let go of the second place.

They did occasionally challenge Leicester City’s dominance at the top of the table but seemed happy to battle it out for second place with only a few slips. Eventually, a 2-0 win against Huddersfield Town on the final day of the regular season, secured Ipswich Town’s place in the top flight. They become the first side since Southampton to achieve back-to-back promotions and are back in the Premier League after 22 long years.
It was a joyous return for fans, critics and neutrals alike with many taking to X (formerly known as Twitter) and Instagram to share their joy. That included Ed Sheeran as the British singer-songwriter took to Instagram and was teary-eyed as he celebrated the Tractor Boys’ success. The 33-year-old is well known as an ardent Ipswich Town fan and seemed ecstatic that his side was back in the top flight.
