Liverpool 1-2 Newcastle Player Ratings: The Reds Suffer Heartbreaking Defeat as the Magpies Lift a Trophy After a Long Time

Following the London Derbies on 16th March, the evening football action saw Liverpool go head to head with Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup Final at Wembley. While it was the first step of redemption for the Merseyside Reds, the Magpies were not ready to leave an inch for Arne Slot’s side. The inspired Magpies thrashed the Mersey Side Reds with goals from Burns and Isak, even though Chiesa scored one back in the late minutes.

The game started with even pace from both sides. At the 10 minute mark, the control of the match was still up for grabs. The match went back and forth, with both teams eager to get the first goal. There were a couple of attempts from the Magpies, but none of the shots had any direction. While no team had established themselves by 30 minutes of the game, it was Newcastle who had seen much of the ball in the last 10 minutes of the first half.

In the 45th minute of the game, we finally saw the first goal, as Burns scored with an amazing header to catch the lazy Liverpool side off guard. It was game on with a rightful advantage for the Magpies.

Another moment of sloppy play from the Reds saw Isak doubling up their advantage. However, it was fortunate for the Reds that Isak was offside. But it only took 2 minutes for Isak to get his second chance, and this time luck was not saving this lazy Liverpool side. The score was 0-2 with the Magpies doubling up their advantage. Safe to say the midfield battle of the day was won by Newcastle United. In the 93rd minute, Chiesa almost scored one goal but it was called offside. It was a clear onside but somehow it was offside. However, with the check confirmed, the goal stood and it was 1-2.

With the full-time whistle, Newcastle United finally won a trophy after 1969. Here are the Liverpool vs Newcastle United Player Ratings.

GK- Kelleher- 4.5/10

Had nothing to do when his team conceded the first goal. It was poor marking from his defenders in the box. However, on the second goal, his reflexes rather looked unpolished.

RB- Quansah- 4/10

Seemed very nervous on the ball on multiple occasions. Almost gifted a chance to the Newcastle forwards in the 26th minute. Not a single aerial ball outside of his box was won by the defender today.

CB- Virgil van Dijk- 5.5/10

Had a solid presence in the backline. However, the Dutchman looked distraught when his team conceded the first goal. He made a stunning ball for Jota in the beginning of the second half.

CB- Konate- 5/10

Made a very important recovery tackle in the 26th minute after a mishandling from Quansah that almost saw Isak with the ball going one-on-one with Kelleher. The Frenchman made a crucial block to deny Barnes in the latter minutes of the first half. Was subbed off in the 56th minute as Slot wanted to introduce Jones.

LB- Robertson- 6.5/10

Made a couple of very important blocks in the box in the 33rd minutes that saved his team from conceding the first goal. He was the best player for Liverpool both going forward and in defense.

CM- Gravenberch- 5/10

Not at all effective in the midfield as he was for most of this season. The Dutch International had 81% passing accuracy. His natural flair of the game was not noticed today. He was taken off in the 73rd minute.

CM- Mac Allister- 5/10

A poor marking from the Argentine saw the tall defender of Newcastle netting the first goal. Nobody knows why he was marking the tall Newcastle defender Burns. Was subbed off in the 67th minute.

CAM- Szoboszlai- 5/10

Not the box-to-box all energetic midfielder today, but still was the player in his team to cover the highest ground. Changed his positions multiple times to be effective, but it was an overall lazy performance from his team.

RM- Mohamed Salah- 5/10

Been a ghost for the first 45 minutes. He looked lively only when he made a stunning cross with a trivela. Given the bar he has set for himself, his performance in the evening was nowhere near it.

LM- Diaz- 5.5/10

Was the better forward in the first half between the three. Looked full of energy every time Liverpool went forward. Had a total of 33 touches and 86% passing accuracy before he was taken off.

ST- Jota- 4/10

Not at all impactful as he wished to be in the first half. Was subbed off in the 56th minute after performing poorly in the first half. He had only a 40% successful passing rate before he was subbed off. He had a total of 16 touches in the game.

Sub- Curtis Jones- 4/10

Came along Darwin Nunez in the 56th minute to have more control of the game. Came in and had a quick impact on the game. Seemed to be the only player who wanted to win the match.

Sub- Darwin Nunez- 4.5/10

Came in the 56th minute to change the fortunes of his team. Had a better forward presence than Diogo Jota. Tried his best to make something happen for his team.

Sub- Gakpo- 5/10

Came in the 67th minute to replace Alexis Mac Allister. Seen a lot of balls in his feet but was not at all effective in the game. His crosses were not up to the mark as well.

Sub- Elliott- 4.5/10

Came along with Chiesa to replace the Colombian winger Luis Diaz. Had a commanding presence ever since he came on and showed energy that the team lacked.

Sub- Chiesa- 5/10

Came in the 73rd minute replacing Gravenberch. Even though the Italian was stripped of game time, he was better on the ball than most of the first team players today. Scored a goal with a stunning finish that saw 1-2 score.

Manager- Arne Slot- 4/10

A lesson for the Dutch manager to use his options sooner than later. His team selection was poor for the evening.

GK- Pope- 5/10

Made a couple of saves. He was shown a yellow card for time wasting. Had nothing to do when Chiesa scored one back for his team.

RB- Trippier- 5/10

Every chance he got, he showed why he is the veteran in the defense line of the Magpies. Was where he was needed to be and calmly sorted out the aerial balls coming his way.

CB- Schar- 5.5/10

Was phenomenal in the back today. Kept the Liverpool forwards at bay throughout the game. Won most of his ground duels and didn’t hesitate going forward. Had a very important clearance to deny Chiesa a shot.

CB- Burn- 5/10

Scored the first goal for his team with a stunning and well-placed header. He had a solid defensive presence in the first half as well. Born and raised in Newcastle, he will remember this goal.

LB- Livramento- 4/10

It seemed as if the Newcastle Left Back had hidden Mo Salah from his teammates throughout the game. What a performance by the left back. Was great going forward as well.

CM- Tonali- 4/10

Had a go in the first half outside the box but the shot didn’t have much swerve at it. Had a great presence in the midfield today. Got himself booked in the additional minutes for time wasting.

CM- Joelinton- 5.5/10

Looked very sharp in the first half. He had the license to go further and on multiple occasions he was seen going past the Liverpool defense line. He cheered each of his tackles today.

CM- Guimaraes- 5/10

The captain had a solid command of his team today. Newcastle United had a discipline with their approach, something that was the reason for the early advantage they got in the later minutes of the first half.

RW- Murphy- 4.5/10

Had a go from outside the box in the 15th minute. Even though the shot had the power, it was lacking direction. He seemed uncomfortable and was finally taken off in the ending minutes of the second half.

LW- Barnes- 4/10

Perhaps an average performance from the wingers. But it will surely be unnoticed due to his team’s triumph. He had a total of 19 touches before he was taken off in the 81st minute of the game.

ST- Isak- 5/10

Like Salah, he was a ghost in the first half. However, just like the big part of this campaign, he dropped deep to help out his team with build-up. Made an amazing half-volley finish in the beginning of the second half to double up their lead.

Sub- Wilson- 4.5/10

Came in the 80th minute to replace Isak and to see off the game. Got his body in the way to eat the additional minutes.

Sub- Willock- 4/10

Came along with Wilson to see the game and enjoy the last minutes of triumph. Covered a lot of grounds ever since he came on.

Sub- Krafth- 4/10

Came in to replace Murphy who was struggling in the later stages of the game. Did not lose his cool even though he came on during the crunch time of the game.

Manager- Howe- 6/10

Was the happier manager today. All of his tactics worked and his team was way better than the opposition.
