Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez update ahead of Inter Miami’s clash against St. Louis City
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez are both going to start and likely play the entirety of Inter Miami’s next match against St. Louis City in Major League Soccer (MLS).
This development comes in the aftermath of the team’s shock 3-1 defeat against Atlanta United on Wednesday.
‘Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez will play’: Miami Assistant weighs in
Inter Miami crashed to a 3-1 defeat against Atlanta United away from home, as the hosts led 2-0 for the most part. Lionel Messi’s goal to make it 2-1 gave Miami some hope, but a dagger from their opponents in the 73rd minute sealed their fate.
Speaking in the post-match press conference after the game, Inter Miami assistant Javier Morales explained that everyone is fit and ready for the next game. He said,
“Everyone is ready to play. We’re going to train, you will see everyone there. There are no physical problems with the players.”
Keeping in mind the summer break for Copa America and Euro 2024, Morales highlighted the importance of ending on a high note. He added,
“Tata (Martino) is going to put the strongest team possible against St. Louis. We want to go into the break by getting three points at home.”
Fortunately for Miami, defeat against Atlanta did not topple them off top spot in the Eastern Conference. Martino’s men still occupy top spot with 34 points from 17 games, leading Cincinnati in second by a point.
Messi and Suarez’s numbers this season
Lionel Messi has been in incredible form for Inter Miami since the start of the season, already hitting double digits in both assists and goals, despite nearly half of the season yet to be played. He has made 14 appearances across competitions, scoring 13 goals and providing 11 assists. As a result, he is currently third in the MLS scoring charts and ranks first for goals and assists combined.
Luis Suarez, on the other hand, has put up some remarkable numbers as well, as he stays competitive with Messi for the Golden Boot. In 19 appearances across competitions, the former Uruguay striker has bagged 13 goals and provided seven assists. He ranks fourth behind Messi in the MLS’ scoring charts and is third in the goals and assists combined chart.
The pair will be in action when Inter Miami hosts St. Louis on June 2.
