Borussia Dortmund have invited Jurgen Klopp to watch tonight’s final

The former manager was in charge during their last final

Borussia Dortmund have reportedly invited former manager Jurgen Klopp for their Champions League final against Real Madrid tonight. Klopp, fresh off wrapping up his Liverpool tenure, guided the BVB to their last final in the competition in 2013.

Dortmund are back in the Champions League final after 11 years and aiming to win their first title in the competition since 1997. However, standing in their way are serial winners Real Madrid, who haven’t lost a European final since 1981.

In their last appearance at this stage of the competition, Klopp was the Dortmund manager and the finals, interestingly, was at Wembley, the venue of tonight’s finals too. Their Der Klassiker rivals Bayern Munich, though, beat them 2-1, quashing hopes of a second Champions League crown.

Since then, Klopp has reached three more finals in the competition, all with Liverpool, and won once – in 2019. Dortmund, though, didn’t have much luck until now, as Edin Terzic’s side caused some big upsets to get here.

Klopp, fittingly, has been invited by his former side to watch them take on Real Madrid tonight, as reported by Eurofoot, and he is set to watch from the stands. Now out of a job after leaving the Reds, the German is enjoying his time off the field.

Borussia Dortmund out to banish 2013 Wembley memories

Borussia Dortmund’s last Champions League final appearance came in 2013 at Wembley stadium, where Bayern Munich beat them 2-1. Ilkay Gundogan had cancelled out Mario Mandzukic’s opener from the spot, but Arjen Robben scored the winner late on to win it for the Bavarians. Now back at the stadium after 11 years, Der BVB will be looking to banish those memories and win the title.
