Lionel Messi hints on his future with Argentina after Copa America final
The Inter Miami star who is currently plying his trade at the Major League Soccer (MLS) scored his first goal of the Copa America tournament in Tuesday’s 2-0 win over Canada and booked his second consecutive final which will be held on 15th July at the Hard Rock Stadium.
Messi has struggled to find the back of the net throughout this tournament and produced a lacklustre display against Ecuador in the quarter-finals. He struck in the 51st minute as he inspired Argentina into another Copa America final.
Will Lionel Messi play in the 2026 World Cup?
The Argentine superstar is yet to confirm whether he will continue to play for La Albiceleste after the 48th edition of the Copa America tournament. After opening his account against Canada, Messi has now bagged 14 goals in the competition and is just three goals shy of the all-time record in the tournament.
The 37-year-old forward has not yet confirmed his plans regarding his participation in Argentina’s title defence at the 2026 World Cup.
“I’m living it like I lived it in the last Copa America, in the last World Cup….these are the last battles and I’m enjoying them to the maximum,” he told TyC Sports.
“The truth is that it’s crazy what this group has done, what the Argentina national team has been doing, because after all this it gives value to all (the tournaments) I and the old generation have played in,” Messi continued.
“It’s not easy for us to be in a final again, for us to compete again to be champions,” he added.
