Kobbie Mainoo’s Early Life

Mainoo was born in 2005 to Ghanaian parents who later moved to England in search of a better life. Representing Ghana on the international stage is still in the cards for the teenager. The 2023/2024 season was a huge struggle for Manchester United as Erik Ten Hag could not make an impact after his first season. The second season had a similar story with a different twist. Apart from the lack of creativity, defensive woes, and a lack of attacking prowess at the heart of their issues. It’s been an issue with the club ever since Sir Alex Ferguson left. The Dutch turned heads to the youth system and found gold, through Mainoo and the manager spoke highly of the youngster during the club’s pre-season tour, which paved the way for a new path.

Emerging from Manchester United’s youth setup, he won the Jimmy Murphy Young Player award in 2023, before moving to the senior team.

2022-23

In May 2022 Mainoo signed a deal with Manchester United in October he was called up to the first-team training squad. In October he sat on the bench for the first time in a Premier League game against Newcastle. Later, his senior debut came on January 2023, in a 3–0 EFL Cup victory against Charlton Athletic. The next month, he made his Premier League debut as a substitute in a 3–0 win over Leicester City.

2023–2024

The new Manchester United campaign started with pre-season but an injury delayed his start. After three months, he returned to make his Premier League debut on November 2023, in a 3–0 win over Everton, earning Man of the Match for the key performance. The same month, he featured in his first UEFA Champions League match in a 3–3 away draw against Galatasaray.

His first United goal came in a 4–2 FA Cup win over Newport County in January, followed by his first Premier League goal to secure a last-minute win over Wolves which was given the Goal of the Month for February. In April, he scored at Old Trafford for the first time in a 2–2 draw with Liverpool.

The FA Cup final saw the youngster score the decisive goal in a 2–1 victory over rivals Manchester City which was the cherry on the cake for the whole season earning him a nomination for the Premier League Young Player of the Season award.

International career

Mainoo has represented England at U-17, U-19, and U-21 levels before making his senior debut. For the first time in May 2024, he was called up to the senior team for friendlies against France and Italy. He made his debut in a 2–1 win over France at the age of 19, and later he played all 90 minutes in a 3–1 victory over Italy, earning the man-of-the-match award.

In June, the teenager was included in the UEFA Euro 2024 squad and made his first competitive against Serbia in the group stage, coming on for the final minutes. He also started the 2–1 draw over Slovakia, making him one of the youngest players to feature for The Three Lions in a major tournament before playing brief moments in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, helping England reach the final, where they lost to Spain.
