Wharton supported Blackburn Rovers as a young child and aged four, in 2008, he was club mascot for a Blackburn game against Chelsea. Two years later, he joined the Blackburn academy.
In February 2022, Wharton signed his first professional contract at Blackburn Rovers, a two-and-a-half-year deal with an option through to 2025. In August 2022, he made his formal debut for the club.

Wharton was a local Blackburn fan since his childhood and joined the club at senior level in the year 2022.
On 31 August 2022, Wharton made his full 90 minutes league debut against Blackpool, winning Player of the Match for an outstanding performance. On October 22, 2022, Wharton scored his first goal for the club in a win over Birmingham City.
In his two year stint at Blackburn, Wharton made 44 appearances, scoring four goals.
Crystal Palace
After 44 appearances at Ewood Park, Wharton was signed by Crystal Palace on February 1, 2024. The fee was undisclosed by the club, but was reported to be an initial fee of £18 million, which could potentially rise to £22 million.
He made his first appearance for the club two days later, coming off the bench against rivals Brighton & Hove Albion in a 4–1 defeat.

International Career
On September 16, 2022, Wharton was called up to the England under-19 squad and made his debut in a 2–0 win against Montenegro. On 31 August, 2023, he was included in England under-20 training camp squad. Later that year, on November 16, he made his U20 debut during a 3–0 defeat against Italy.
Fast forward to March 25, 2024, Wharton received his first call up for the England under-21 team for a Euro qualifying match, and made his debut the following day, coming on as a substitute in a 7–0 win over Luxembourg.
The biggest moment of his international career came when Wharton was called up by Gareth Southgate as part of the 33-player England preliminary squad for UEFA Euro 2024. He made his England senior debut as a substitute on June, 2024, in a 3–0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina. On June 6, 2024, he was named in the final 26-man squad for Euro 2024, where he remained an unused substitute

Adam Wharton was born in Blackburn, England on February 6, 2004. Wharton and his family are Blackburn born and bred. He has two brothers, Scott Wharton and Simon Wharton.
