Jurgen Klopp reiterates desire to stay away from football for now as he rejects USMNT offer
The US Soccer Federation seems hellbent on securing the services of Jurgen Klopp as their new head coach. The federation parted way with Gregg Berhalter earlier this week as the USMNT crashed out of the Copa America 2024 in the group stages. With the World Cup 2026 on the horizon, the US Federation wants a top manager to take charge of the national team.
Jurgen Klopp had emerged as the leading candidate for the position, with reports claiming the German is on top of the federation’s list. However, their efforts might have taken a massive dent with the German allegedly refusing to take over the position. Klopp parted ways with Liverpool at the end of the previous campaign citing he was getting tired with the rush that comes with the job.
While the former Reds boss has been enjoying time away from the game, many expected the US Federation to convince Klopp to come out of his sabbatical. However, it looks like the German is not interested in getting back to the sport this soon and the USMNT will have to continue to look for other alternatives.
Thierry Henry emerges as potential candidate after Jurgen Klopp refuses USMNT
With Jurgen Klopp out of the race for the foreseeable future, the US Federation has identified a list of names who could take up the mantle as Gregg Berhalter’s successor. One such name on the list is France U23 head coach Thierry Henry. The Frenchman has been attracting attention for his possession-based attacking playstyle and many in the US Federation feel he could be the right man for the job.
However, Herny isn’t the only candidate on the list after Jurgen Klopp’s refusal. According to reports, USMNT legend Steve Cherundolo and Columbus Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy are also in the running for the position. It will be interesting to see what’s next on the federation’s agenda after being denied their dream pick.
