“There are too many questions” – Athletic Bilbao president comments on Nico Williams’ future
The winger’s contract runs until 2027…
Athletic Bilbao‘s president Jon Uriarte has hinted at Nico Williams staying put at San Mames this summer. The winger broke into the senior team in 2021 and is under contract with Los Leones for another three years.
Since making his senior debut, Williams has improved year on year. Last season was perhaps his best with 11 assists for Bilbao, the most in La Liga after only Villarreal’s Alex Baena (14), while also chipping in with another five goals.
His talent haven’t gone unnoticed in Europe’s more glamorous quarters, with the 21-year-old supposedly on Arsenal and Barcelona’s radar. However, the Bilbao president Uriarte has indicated that he might stay on, despite speculations on his future. He said (quoted by Fabrizio Romano on X):
“We have a top project with no limit and we’re able to keep top players like Nico Williams at the club. There are too many questions always asked to Nico on his future as Federation has not been able to protect him. We ask for respect.”
Nico is gunning for European glory with Spain
On Sunday, Spain play England in Berlin for the Euro 2024 finals. Nico Williams hasn’t been a regular starter but has impressed in his bit-part role, even scoring in their 4-1 drubbing of Georgia in the last-16 of the competition. Against the Three Lions, the 21-year-old can expect some game time if La Roja struggles to break down their stoic backline.
