“Did anyone expect us to become champions?”: Jurgen Klopp comments on claims that Liverpool were expected to be champions
With Jurgen Klopp departing at the end of the 2023/24 season, it had many believing that Liverpool would produce a surge of performances and lift the quadruple at the end of the term. However, while the Reds did win the Carabao Cup, they crashed out of the Europa League thanks to Atalanta. The Serie A side walked away as 3-1 winners on aggregate after Manchester United beat Liverpool in the FA Cup quarter-finals.
That only left the Premier League title but with just one win in their last three games, a run that has included two defeats to Crystal Palace and Everton, it has placed Liverpool in a tough spot. That combined with Arsenal and Manchester City’s wins, have seen the Reds drop to third. It has fans wondering whether a title charge is still on even with five games left.
Jurgen Klopp comments on the recent poor results
However, despite his side’s run of disappointing results, Jurgen Klopp refused to blame his squad and instead asserted that they are focused on finishing the season strong. The German also asserted that his side were never considered in the title race at the start of the season but that it only developed as the season grew. He also added that they’re still disappointed but will focus on the future.
“Did anyone expect us to become champions at the start of the season? No, but it developed in this direction. We go now to Aston Villa, they still have a few points less than us, so we need points still to be definitely [qualified for Champions League places], also Tottenham. Nobody here is happy at all,” Klopp said, reported Goal.
“Just to explain how different it is. We cannot go back to the point where we say ‘Yeah, well [qualifying for the Champions League] is good enough’. It is very good, but because we were so close, we are very, very disappointed at this moment in time. We cannot change that.”
