Inter Kashi 0–1 Mumbai City FC Player Ratings: Mumbai City Edge past Kashi to Make Their Place in the Semis

After knocking out the ISL Runners up Bengaluru FC, Inter Kashi face off against the first team to ever make an ISL double – Mumbai City FC for the quarter final of the Kalinga Super Cup where the winner will face the winners of the next quarter final played between Northeast United and Jamshedpur FC.

Inter Kashi came in with almost the same squad while Mumbai City FC missed their key player Bipin Singh, who was replaced by Noufal. They also chose to field themselves in an unusual 5-4-1 formation following a success they got in the previous match by making a change in their formation. Mumbai, who were missing other players due to injury, were not the favourites coming to the tournament, however, a solid win in the pre-quarter would have boosted their confidence.

Mumbai initiated the proceedings, and the game was pretty silent in the initial minutes and had a very slow tempo as both teams played the ball in the midfield and did not put the backline under a real test. Other than some routine moves, both teams failed to make any big impact in the difficult conditions. The playing conditions became even worse when the field was swarmed by bees that kept the play on hold for some amount of time, indicating that there will be a big chunk of additional time for the first half.

After the game resumed following the unusual break, the game started to take off a bit, and it was Kashi who showed much better intent than Mumbai City FC. Edmund and Prashant made some good runs to probably challenge the opponent’s backline for the first time in the match. But Mehtab Singh stood tall as he made some strong challenges to keep the ball away. Mumbai had freedom in the midfield, but while coming to the midfield, it felt like they were completely locked. The referee announced a 14-minute additional time, and from then Mumbai started to make some attacks too.

Inter Kashi in the final minutes of the additional time turned the defence into attack as they initiated a quick counter attack from the services of Prashant but the substitute Krouma was there to mark him keeping the deadlock at first half. And just moments after this attempt, a pretty long half came to an end and both teams went inside the dressing room to formulate a new plan and come back with more aggression and intent for the second half.

In the second half, both teams went on offense. But after a few minutes, the players felt tired. Noufal and Ortiz constantly gave headaches to the men in orange. In one such instance, Ortiz took a powerful shot, which was saved by the keeper. But that did not stop them from attacking.

They kept attempting, and once again, Noufal made a run and gave a pass to Ortiz, who took a couple of powerful shots. The shots were stopped by the Kashi defenders. However, everyone was too focused on stopping the ball, and this made Chhangte a free man inside the box, and he controlled the rebound shot and took a stunning shot to find the back of the net.

From then though Kashi desperately tried to attack, their mind and body did not coordinate, and they found it difficult to make attacks and failed to register even a shot on target. Mumbai had got the rhythm of the game and had the steering wheel. They kept attacking and smoothly guided their way to the semi-final with a solid and hard-earned win of 0-1.

Here are the Inter Kashi vs Mumbai City FC Player Ratings.

GK – Shubham Dhas – 7/10

Was not challenged in the first half throughout as the opponents did not initiate attacks. He just had to make a few routine catches and clearances. When Ortiz made a powerful first time shot in the second half, he made an important save keeping the Kashi in the game. Made a flying save in an unexpected situation when Bijoy made an error. Cant blame the keeper for the goal as saving that was near to impossible.

LB – Aritra Das – 5/10

Played a bit higher than his position in the midfield third. Made some poor decisions, which gave away the ball to the opponents. Needed to do better, and his decisions were often not in the interest of his team. He was seen pushing his teammates and taking charge of defending, but failing miserably in the end.

CB – David Humanes – 7/10

Made the Inter Kashi defence look like a strong pack hungry to protect their fortress. Challenged Nikolas physically multiple times. Put his body in front of the ball every time the opponents made a shot. Showed courage and stood strong. Kept the back line compact and formed a wall with them.

CB – Bijoy Varghese – 6.5/10

Kept his eyes on the ball and defended against the moves of Ortiz. Read some passes made by Chhangte and kept them out of danger. Made a very big blunder as he kicked the ball from outside the box to his own goal. Only due to the reflex of the keeper, he was saved from an own goal. He was committed to defending at any cost. Put his full strength on Karelis to defend the ball even when his team was demotivated after trailing.

RB – Sarthak Golui – 6/10

Had a good role in silencing Vikram Partap Singh. Was not involved for a large part of the match and relatively remained less impactful in the second half. Added some amount of pressure when the opponents made an attack and was involved a couple of times in some interceptions. It was the source of the long throws, which created trouble and gave Kashi a glimmer of hope.

CM – Edmund Lalrindika – 6/10

He was silent for a large part of the match. However, after the unforeseen break in the first half, it felt like he was having so much vigour. He made some speedy moves but overcommitted whenever he lost the ball, and as a result. Came in some unwanted positions and made some risky challenges. Took some shots under pressure, but they were overhit.

CM – Nikola Stojanović – 6.5/10

Won the ball back multiple times whenever the opponents won the ball in the space left in the wings. I was a bit inclined to the left flank to stop Noufal whenever he tried to make his moves. Added pressure on the Mumbai players at some dangerous positions, which led them to concede some fouls. Tried to score the equaliser but he felt short in front of the blue shirts.

CM – Tomba Singh – 6/10

Was a bit casual in controlling the ball in the midfield and this led to him losing the ball. However had a key role in clearing multiple balls that created some fuss inside the box. After that he was seen playing for the badge with a higher motivation and grit.

LW – Bryce Miranda – 6/10

Had a fair deal of difficulty as Noufal was there trying to mark him foot to foot. Tried to make some shots along with the advantage of his pace but most of them went wide. After 65 minutes, he lost focus and was struggling to make runs.

RW – Prasanth K – 6.5/10

Made some very good movements from the midfield inside the box but the poor technique by his teammates cost him from making contributions. Took the ball to the wide area to make some crosses, however, Mehtab stood strong.

CF – Mario Barco Vila – 6.5/10

He was at the wrong place at the wrong time, as he was given a yellow card for no reason when two opponents collided with each other. This made him play safe for a large part of the game. However, even before getting booked too he was not an integral figure for the match. Got a chance to open the accounts in the final seconds of the first half, but it missed the goal by inches. In the second half, he came into the defence to clear the attempts of Mumbai.

Sub – Mohammed Asif Khan – 6/10

Sub – Babovic – 6/10

Sub – Bidyashagar Singh – 6/10

Sub – K. Singh – NA

Sub – K. Panicker – NA

Coach – Carlos Fonseca – 6/10

Had a commendable job, though his team was on the losing side. Had a great game till the minute the opponents scored. He was great in the defensive approach, but the problems in the offensive third cost his team

GK – Rehnesh P – 6/10

Was not challenged throughout the first half. Though he was alerted multiple times in the first half, his defenders made sure that he had no threats. In some instances, rather than collecting the ball he fumbled and made some unwanted clearances and conceded throw-ins which invited danger. Rather than keeping the ball in the final minutes, he cleared them and gifted to the opponents.

LB – Vikram Partap Singh – 6/10

The gaffer assigned him an unusual full-back position. But he was not restricted to that area only. He was eager to perform and made some moves by making some accelerated runs from the left flank. Was kept silent by the opponent wing-back and did not perform up to expectations.

CB – Mehtab Singh – 6.8/10

Made some sliding tackles on Edmund whenever he sensed danger. Was present to stop Prashant and block the crosses made by him from the wings. He was one of the key reasons why Noufal and Vikram had the autonomy to move forward and not focus much on the back line.

CB – Nathan Rodrigues – 5/10

Was not involved in the match apart from making some passes to the midfield and some easy clearances. Was relatively silent as the opponents did not make any attacks to properly challenge him. Unfortunately he sustained an injury while trying to win a ball from Prashant which led to him being subbed off in the first half.

CB – Valpuia – 6.8/10

Knew Edmund would be active in the right flank, and whenever the ball came searching for Edmund in the attacking third, he made quick runs, put his body in front of the ball, and resisted him from moving inside the box. Had a multitude of minutes, and this experience helped him to perform without succumbing to the pressure. Made an error which led to Edmund making a counterattack, which he won back by making a dangerous foul. However was lucky as the referee was not convinced of the jersey pull.

RB – P N Noufal – 7.5/10

Had the pace and relatively had the responsibility as a wing back rather than a full back. Was speed on the right wing and was seen everywhere on the flank. Whenever his team needed him in the attack, he was there, and whenever he had to move down the strands, he went back. Made a beautiful cross to Ortiz that, to their dismay, did not go in. Had a big role to play in their goal as he was the one who brought the ball inside the box.

LM – Jorge Ortiz – 7.5/10

Properly positioned himself in the spaces which was left by the opponent defenders and made some beautiful first touches. Connected the ball and controlled it well. However, when he tried to infiltrate the penalty box, Bijoy came as an obstacle. Made one of the first on target – challenging shot which was saved by the keeper. Made a couple of shots once again, which hit the bodies of the Kashi defenders. However, this rebound ball was won by Chhangte, and he found the back of the net.

CM – Hitesh Sharma – 6/10

Made some passes in the midfield. Was silent but in that silence too he crafted play for his team. Made some interceptions in the midfield and won back possession multiple times.

CM – Franklin Nazareth – 6/10

Was involved in some duels and won a good amount of them. Added pressure to the opponents and made them retreat the ball back to start their build up again from scratch.

RW – Lallianzuala Chhangte – 7.5/10

Made some runs and passes in the midfield. Did not create any impact as a winger in the first half, except the very first minutes where he made a cross which was easily taken by the keeper. Had a playmaker role in the first half. In the second half, out of all the confusion in the box, he remained composed and took a shot out of the rebound to make a powerful shot that hit the inner post and went in, breaking the deadlock.

CF – Nikolaos Karelis – 6.5/10

Made some quick transitions by winning the ball from the midfield, making some combination play and moving forward into the box. However he did not get proper support as his teammates did not anticipate his moves and for this reason the moves went to vain. Had a hard time beating Bijoy and making attack.

Sub – Krouma – 6/10

Came in early as a forced sub as Nathan sustained an injury. Was key in stopping the counterattack initiated by Kashi from the services of Prashant, which could have led to the opponents scoring in the final seconds of the first half.

Sub – Brandon Frenandes – 6/10

Coach – Peter Kratky – 7/10

He was having a frustrating first half as his team struggled to get past the midfield. Employed his trump card, Noufal, and used him in the best possible manner by giving him freedom to move forward on the pitch, which helped his team. Attacked from the wings, and one such attack led to a goal, and his team sealed their tickets to the semis.

Sportsdunia Player of the Match is Jorge Ortiz.
