“I was at Chelsea when I was a kid”: Harvey Elliott opens up on getting rejected by the Blues at 11
Elliott has since carved a niche at Liverpool
Liverpool FC midfielder Harvey Elliott has opened up on getting rejected by Chelsea when he was a young kid. He also revealed how he would spend the next few months playing only with his friends, not professionally.
Having joined Liverpool in 2019, Elliott only established himself in the first team during the 2022-23 season. This season, however, has statistically been his best, netting four goals and assisting nine more in all competitions.
Elliott’s journey wasn’t always smooth, though, having been rejected by Chelsea for “being too small” when he was a kid. Opening up on that moment, he said:
“I was at a few clubs when I was younger. I was at Chelsea when I was a kid, and they released me because they said I was too small. And then I was just playing with my friends for a year, like Sunday League, [when I was] 11, 12.”
After getting turned down by Chelsea, Elliott joined Queens Park Rangers’ youth academy, before moving to Fulham, where he then broke into their senior team during the 2018-19 season. In the following summer, Liverpool came calling, and he has made 117 appearances for the club since then, lifting five titles.
Liverpool out of the Premier League title race
Departing manager Jurgen Klopp’s dreams of bowing out with a second Premier League title was officially over on Saturday when Manchester City beat Fulham. The Reds can no longer mathematically catch them, and the race is now between City and Arsenal only. It’s a truly disappointing end to Liverpool’s season that promised so much. Until March, the Reds were aiming for a historic quadruple, but will now finish their campaign with just the Carabao Cup, won back in February.
