Grading Every Premier League Team’s 2025 Winter Transfer Window: Who had the best mini overhaul midway through the season?
As the clock struck 23:00 GMT on February 3rd, deal sheets were flying. The transfer committees were working overtime and the players were eagerly anticipating what would happen in the last few minutes. And finally, the window slammed shut. Millions of Euros changed hands and few Premier League clubs were the most involved. Let us grade the Premier League team’s winter windows.
There were no blockbuster deals on show this time in the Premier League. But there was business aplenty. Few teams needed players desperately to cover their shortcomings. A few teams were in a cash crunch and had to sell off their prized assets. A few teams decided to be simply idle as they waited patiently for the summer window.
And of course, many youngsters moved on loans, and several loan deals were rearranged. With squads now announced for the second half of the season, Sportsdunia has conducted in-depth analysis and research to assess how each team performed in the transfer window.
Grading Factors
Impact on the Team
The players coming in the winter window must be sure shot starters. They have to be absolutely impactful because of the trust put in them. Since a lot of deals are loan only, the players will have a great audition chance to make their move a permanent one.
Value for Money
Well, this one factor certainly remains the same. Be it the summer window or the winter window any deal signed must have good value. Few permanent deals have taken place and it would be a bit harsh to judge them right now. But we will grade the windows according to the said criteria.
Ability to keep Players
The free-spending Saudi Pro League knocked on the doors of many Premier League clubs to fly away with their key assets. So the ability of each club to hold off the big money and keep their players happy will also be a factor while grading the teams.
Grading Scale
S (Best), A+, A, B+, B, C , D (Worst)
Grades of Premier League Team’s Winter Window
Arsenal
Arsenal had a shocking start to the year as they learned Bukayo Saka would be out of action for a couple of months. Adding insult to injury, Gabriel Jesus joined him in the treatment room too. This certainly was a wake-up call for the Gunners to add some serious firepower. They looked at strikers to possibly displace Kai Havertz but they didn’t get any with hopes of getting a premium striker in the summer.
The emergence of Ethan Nwaneri and his key goals have watered down the issue a little bit. The dismantling of Manchester City recently would’ve hampered the need for deadline deals. Strikers like Santiago Jimenez and Randal Kolo Muani were on the move but Arsenal let them pass. Ollie Watkins was the closest to signing for them but the terms weren’t agreed.
Mikel Arteta’s show of faith must back be well repaid by the players or else the pressure would mount on the manager. The Premier League title race is just about open and Arsenal must be at their best. Heading into the Champions League knockouts, they might feel a bit short on quality on the bench. Real questions would be asked if their depth is exposed in the later stages.
The Gunners did lose academy talent Ayden Heaven to rivals Manchester United on a permanent deal. Several youngsters like Marquinhos were moved on loans too.
Grade: B
In: N/A
Out: Josh Robinson (Wigan), Ayden Heaven (Manchester United), Marquinhos (Cruzeiro, Loan), Maldini Kacurri (Bromley, Loan)
Aston Villa
Aston Villa had a stellar start to the window when they quietly signed Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund. With the Villans making it to the Champions League knockout, they needed tried and tested players there as their attack never had the exposure on the biggest stages.
The knock of the Saudi Pro League proved too hard to resist for them as they let Jhon Duran leave in a shock move. There were talks of Ollie Watkins being sold too to comply with the PSR rules but the English international stayed put. Heading into the final day they had two key issues to resolve.
The answers to those issues would certainly scream a superb window for them as Marcus Rashford and Marco Asensio arrived on loans. The forwards provide Villa with much-needed width and creativity from the wings as they are natural wingers. In the backline, Axel Disasi arrived from Chelsea on loan as Diego Carlos left permanently.

Villa’s coveted summer signing Jaden Philogene had to leave the club just after six months. The talented English winger never really took his chances in Birmingham and was happy swapping them for Ipswich. The ever-struggling Emiliano Buendia was sent on loan to Bayer Leverkusen. Loan deals were arranged for Kosta Nedeljkovic and Louie Barry.
Grade: A+
In: Doneyll Malen (Borussia Dortmund), Andres Garcia (Levante), Marcus Rashford (Manchester United, Loan), Marco Asensio (PSG, Loan), Axel Disasi (Chelsea, Loan)
Out: Lewis Dobbin (Norwich City, Loan), Jaden Philogene (Ipswich Town), Diego Carlos (Fenerbahce), Emiliano Buendia (Bayer Leverkusen, Loan), Louie Barry (Hull, Loan), Jhon Duran (Al-Nassr), Kosta Nedeljkovic (RB Leipzig, Loan)
Bournemouth
One of the most in-form teams in the league, Bournemouth have opted against strengthening in the winter window. With potentially season-ending injuries to Evanilson and Enes Unal, they looked wafer thin in the forward line. Andoni Iraola was forced to tinker with his lineup and he found amazing solutions from within.
Dango Ouattara’s hattrick as a makeshift striker gave him full confidence and Justin Kluivert is hitting levels his father would be proud of. Tyler Adams has come back from injury and is looking like a new signing in the middle of the park. With European football dangling so close, Iraola probably should’ve strengthened his squad.
The club did however secure a lot of youngsters from various academies. Julio Soler was signed as left-back by Lanus as there were doubts about Milos Kerkez’s long-term future at the club. Kerkez could still leave in the summer making Soler’s signing a smart one in hindsight as he can be slowly gelled. Highly rated talents like Kai Crampton and Eli Junior Kroupi (loaned out) were snapped up too.
Grade: B+
In: Matai Akinmboni (DC United), Kai Crampton (Chelsea), Julio Soler (Lanus), Zain Silcott-Duberry (Chelsea), Eli Junior Kroupi (FC Lorient), Daniel Jebbison (Watford, Loan Recall)
Out: Philip Billing (Napoli, Loan), Max Aarons (Valencia, Loan), Mark Travers (Middlesborough, Loan), Eli Junior Kroupi (FC Lorient, Loan)
Brentford
Brentford are never the flashy spender in transfer windows. Especially the winter ones as Thomas Frank is very content with his squad often. The squad looks well rounded and he was happy with loans of fringe players being managed.
Mads Roerslev’s loan exit was perhaps unexpected given he was starting regularly for the Bees. On the arrival front, Michael Kayode was signed on loan from Fiorentina. The 20-year-old could nail down a starting spot as the right wing-back in Frank’s 3/5 at-the-back system. Kayode lost his starting spot at Fiorentina and would be glad to get regular minutes.
Grade: C
In: Michael Kayode (Fiorentina, Loan)
Out: Jayden Meghoma (Preston North End, Loan), Mads Roerslev (Wolfsburg, Loan), Kyreece Lisbie (Colchester United)
Brighton & Hove Albion
Perhaps the biggest win for the club would be keeping Kaoru Mitoma with them for the rest of the season. The Japanese international was the subject of a mammoth bid from Al-Nassr but the Seagulla resisted their efforts. Mitoma was fighting for his spot in the lineup under Fabian Hurzeler.
The young manager made an impressive start to life at the Amex stadium. He has earned the reputation of a giant killer but is often losing his way in straightforward fixtures. His team selection especially baffles some as he picked only a single midfielder in the 7-0 demolition against Nottingham Forest. Diego Gomez’s arrival from Inter Miami should help him out.
Stefanos Tzimas a highly rated striker was signed from Nuremberg but immediately loaned back to them. His arrival would certainly spell the end for Evan Ferguson at the club. Ferguson joined rivals West Ham on loan and Julio Enciso left the club again on a short-term deal. The next summer would be crucial to sort out Brighton’s long squad.
Grade: B
In: Diego Gomez (Inter Miami), Eiran Cashin (Derby County), Stefanos Tzimas (Nuremberg)
Out: Jakub Moder (Feyenoord), Julio Enciso (Ipswich Town, Loan), Imari Samuels (Dundee United), Cameron Peupion (ADO Den Haag), Valentin Barco (Strasbourg, Loan), Benicio Baker-Boaitey (Milwall), Ruairi McConville (Noriwch), Evan Ferguson (West Ham, Loan), Ed Turns (Exeter City), Marcus Ifill (Bromley), Stefanos Tzimas (Nuremberg, Loan)
Chelsea
Chelsea’s squad issues are well-known. They have a bloated squad and have two teams famously known as A team and B team. This window gave them the chance to trim their squad. For the first time after multiple windows, the outgoings dominated the incomings in West London.
Injuries in the back line have forced them to recall the impressive Trevoh Chalobah from Cyrstal Palace. They have also added Mathis Amougou to their stocked midfield.
Axel Disasi and Joao Felix left the club on loans on the deadline day. After reluctance to loan Disasi to a top 4 rival, Chelsea’s arm was twisted. Felix who just arrived 6 months ago was on the move. Fringe players like Renato Viega, Ben Chilwell and Carney Chukwuemeka all left on loans. Cesare Casadei was the only one sold permanently.
The inability to sell players would haunt them again in the summer window. Clearlake’s spending from the past couple of years is yet to bear fruit and with a majority of the new signings unable to find a spot on the bench, the project is a bit lost at the moment. In that regard, they have wasted a window to cut it down.
Grade: C
In: David Datro Fofana (Goztepe S.K., Loan Recall), Gabriel Slonina (Barnsley, Loan Recall), Trevoh Chalobah (Crystal Palace, Loan Recall), Mathias Amougou (Saint-Etienne)
Out: Kai Crampton (Bournemouth), Zain Silcott-Duberry (Bournemouth), Renato Viega (Juventus, Loan), Cesare Casadei (Torino), Carney Chukwuemeka (Borussia Dortmund, Loan), Ben Chilwell (Crystal Palace, Loan), Harvey Vale (QPR), Axel Disasi (Aston Villa, Loan), Joao Felix (AC Milan, Loan)
Crystal Palace
Oliver Glasner’s high-flying Eagles came crashing to earth this season. The Austrian’s system was found out early in the season. Eddie Nketiah is yet to score in the league for them and to ease the pressure they have signed Romain Esse. The 19-year-old scored on his debut to excite the Eagles’ fans. Perhaps they could’ve signed a proven goalscorer to take some responsibility from Jean-Phillipe Mateta.
All the changes to the Palace squad took place in the backline. Marc Guehi was desired by many clubs but he won’t be moving for these six months. It might all change in the summer if Palace continue to be battling relegation every season. Trevoh Chalobah was playing some of his best football under Glasner but was cruelly recalled by Chelsea. They did ease the pain however by sending Ben Chilwell the other way on loan.
Ben Chilwell was completely shut off from the Chelsea squad and was training on his own. The English international would get a chance to play regularly again but he would need to displace Tyrick Mitchell.
Grade: C
In: Romain Esse (Milwall), Ben Chilwell (Chelsea, Loan)
Out: Rob Holding (Sheffield United, Loan), Jeffrey Schlupp (Celtic, Loan), Trevoh Chalobah (Chelsea, Loan Recall)
Everton
Perhaps the managerial change was Everton’s biggest signing this window. Sean Dyche stagnated with the club and they were awfully struggling in front of the goal. David Moyes was roped in on an emergency basis to beat the drop. Moyes received a huge welcome on his return to Goodison Park. Although he lost his first game, he delivered three consecutive wins to take them 9 points clear of the relegation zone.
Everton should have spent on the forward line but were happy with goals from Beto. They gave Carlos Alcaraz on loan to Moyes to find some goals. Alcaraz has some Premier League experience and could surely help the club. The club is waiting for Summer to back the manager to get his players. They have just enough gas to survive in the league this season and would be hoping for better things under new ownership in the new stadium from next summer.
Grade: D
In: Carlos Alcaraz (Flamengo, Loan)
Out: Stanley Mills (Oxford United), Harrison Armstrong (Derby County, Loan)
Fulham
Fulham have had a quiet window and you could listen to the pin drop at Craven Cottage. Marco Silva is enjoying another fine season with the resources at his disposal. He didn’t see the need to add any new faces as they are 9th in the league currently. They held off interest from a few clubs to keep Antonee Robinson.
In Tete’s absence, Timothy Castagne has done well to take the right-back spot. It could’ve been a cause for shopping had the Belgian international not stepped up. The Cottagers have added Seth Chingwaro to their ranks from the famed Manchester City academy.
Grade: C
In: Seth Chingwaro (Manchester City), Matt Dibley-Dias (Northampton Town, Loan Recall), Devan Tanton (Chesterfield, Loan Recall)
Out: Connor McAvoy (Wealdstone, Loan), Olly Sanderson (Harrogate, Loan)
Ipswich
Ipswich Town have signed 3 players in January with the hope of surviving this season. If the signings do perform it won’t be a miracle to see the tractor boys stay in the league for one more season. They have been short at the back with limited top-flight experience and creativity has been an issue too. They addressed it well in January.
Ben Godfrey had joined on loan from Atalanta with plenty of experience. Julio Enciso, the talented Paraguayan has also arrived in East Anglia. He could create plenty of chances for Delap to get them going. Signing Jaden Philogene on a permanent deal from Aston Villa caught everyone’s eyes. What a chance this could be for the youngster to string good performances and help his new side stay up.
Grade: B+
In: Ben Godfrey (Atalanta, Loan), Jaden Philogene (Aston Villa), Julio Enciso (Brighton & Hove Albion, Loan), Somto Boniface (Chelsea), Alex Palmer (West Bromwich Albion),
Out: George Edmundson (Middlesborough), Ali Al-Hamadi (Stoke City, Loan), Harry Clarke (Sheffield United, Loan), Osman Foyo (AFC Wimbledon)
Leicester City
Have the foxes already accepted their fate this season? They are only two points from safety and have decided to do nothing to change it in the window. No disrespect to him but the signing of Woyo Coulibaly from Parma wouldn’t help them much.
Ruud Van Nistelrooy’s squad is screaming for a pacy and creative winger and the board hasn’t backed him one bit. A new centre-back who could organize the defence was certainly needed. Especially after fellow strugglers Everton dispatched them 4-0 with ease. The inability to act in the market when safety is achievable is very questionable.
Grade: D
In: Woyo Coulibaly (Palma)
Out: Tom Cannon (Sheffield United), Hamza Choudhury (Sheffield United, Loan), Arjan Raikhy (Tamworth, Loan)
Liverpool
Well, there goes another transfer window in which Liverpool fans are promised a busier next window. The next window is simply never arriving for the Merseyside club. You could not fault Arne Slot and his team for their performances on the field. They have been that good. But off the pitch, questions can surely be asked of the board. Especially for leaving the manager and players to fight for themselves in a quadruple-chasing season.
Potentially 3 all-time greats of the club could be free agents come July. No action was taken in the window to time them down to long-term contracts. Make no mistake, the owners, FSG could convince the fans that they signed 3 new players in the summer if they get them to extend.
The squad had no new faces in the summer except Federico Chiesa. It was obvious that the club needed a new left-back and a backup defensive midfielder to add depth. Despite the odd links here and there, there was nothing concrete. They were linked to Khvicha Kvaratskhlia all of a sudden and nothing materialized. Jarell Hato and Milos Kerkez were scouted but the club was waiting for an ideal opportunity that would never arrive to pounce.
The club did arrange loans for their youth prospects such as Jayden Danns, Kaide Gordon and Stefan Bajcetic.
Grade: D
In: N/A
Out: Rhys Williams (Morecambe, Loan), Marcelo Pitaluga (Fluminense), Stefan Bajcetic (Las Palmas, Loan), Calvin Ramsey (Kilmonrack, Loan), Kaide Gordon (Portsmouth, Loan), Luca Furnell-Gill (Tottenham Hotspur), Jayden Danna (Sunderland, Loan)
Manchester City
Ah, this is the Manchester City we all knew. After a rare quiet summer, the defending champions reminded everyone about their financial might. They have gone on and casually thrown £200 million at players to cover a bad season. Pep Guardiola was having his worst-ever season as a manager and he needed all the backing he could get to avoid a disaster.
The record-setting champions lost their way early on as they lost Rodri to an ACL injury and their midfield aged badly. Kyle Walker became a shadow of himself and the defence was overpowered with ease. Guardiola’s decision to not replace Julian Alvarez bit him back badly. They suddenly are in a top-four fight now and only made it to the knockouts in the Champions League by the skin of their teeth.
To ease some pain, they have spent in the window and addressed some issues. It could only be the first phase of the rebuild but it takes a lot of time to fix these issues. Omar Marmoush arrived from Frankfurt after a stellar 18 months for £75 million. He made an impressive start and could help take some burden off Erling Haaland.
The remaining signings came in the engine room and backline. Nico Gonzalez was announced on the deadline day after a thrashing against Arsenal. The youngster can control the game more than City’s current options. Abdukodir Khusanov was thrown into the deep end and made a glaring mistake against Chelsea just minutes in. Further defensive signings like Vitor Reis and Juma Bah were made with an eye on the future.
The club captain Kyle Walker left on a shocking loan move as he lost his place in Guardiola’s lineup.
Grade: A
In: Claudio Echeverri (River Plate), Abdukodir Khusanov (Lens), Vitor Reis (Palmeiras), Omar Marmoush (Eintracht Frankfurt), Nico Gonzalez (FC Porto), Juma Bah (Real Valladolid)
Out: Issa Kabore (Werder Bremen, Loan), Josh Wilson-Esbrand (Stoke City, Loan), Juma Bah (RC Lens, Loan), Kyle Walker (AC Milan, Loan), Dan Batty (Tottenham Hotspur)
Manchester United
Manchester United had a mixed first transfer window under Ruben Amorim. The Portuguese manager was still getting to terms with his squad and the window arrived to fast-track his progress. The tactician is yet to decide what he wants at his club. But he quickly decided what he did not want and took necessary action there.
Patrick Dorgu became the first senior signing of the new era and could easily become Amorim’s go-to left wingback. This spells the end for Diogo Dalot’s makeshift games there. Ayden Heaven, a centreback for future was also signed from Arsenal. The manager wanted to add some forward options. Mathys Tel was almost signed but the deal did not go through.
The collapse of Tel’s deal combined with Amorim booting out a couple of players might hurt him this season. But then again, Amorim warned they have to suffer a lot this season before it gets better. Reports of Lisandro Martinez’s injury being an ACL will also leave them short defensively.
Amorim’s relationship with Marcus Rashford deteriorated and they couldn’t see eye to eye. The boyhood hero had to leave the club of his life on a loan to keep playing regularly. Antony, the £100 million flop also left for Real Betis on loan. Tyrell Malacia joined PSV till the end of the season.
Grade: B+
In: Ayden Heaven (Arsenal), Patrick Dorgu (Lecce)
Out: Ethan Ennis (Doncaster Rovers, Loan), Antony (Real Betis, Loan), Joe Hugill (Carlisle United, Loan), Marcus Rashford (Aston Villa, Loan), Louis Jackson (Tranmere Rovers, Loan), Tyrell Malacia (PSV, Loan)
Newcastle United
Despite not signing anyone, this window is borderline successful for Newcastle United. They managed to keep hold of star striker Alexander Isak. There were murmurs everywhere that Arsenal and Liverpool would queue for his services, but the Swedish international’s head did not turn. We can not say if it will be the same in the summer as the Magpies might be forced to act.
They only needed cover in the middle of the park and a winger perhaps to seal the top-four spot if Nottingham Forest and Manchester City slip up. Eddie Howe has to be extremely careful as he juggles his side for the late run-in.
They also bid farewell to Miguel Almiron. One of the club’s longest longest-serving players who had a famous purple patch a couple of seasons ago.
Grade: C
In: N/A
Out: Issac Hayden (Portsmouth, Loan), Alex Murphy (Bolton Wanderers, Loan), Jamie Miley (Hartlepool United), Miguel Almiron (Atlanta United), Lloyd Kelly (Juventus, Loan)
Nottingham Forest
Nottingham Forest has overspent in the past couple of seasons. They have signed and sold an incredible number of players but it will all be forgiven if they finish the season on a high. Nuno Espirito Santo’s men are third in the table. It looked like they were found out after a 5-0 defeat to Bournemouth. But they have bounced back and thrashed Brighton & Hove Albion 7-0 at home.
They are in an excellent position now thanks to their previous spending. Their players have to play out of their skin to sustain this till the finish line. As a sweet result of their previous spending, they couldn’t spend any more in January when they actually needed players and depth to seal a top 4 spot.
Grade: C
In: Wayne Hennessey (Free Agent), Tyler Bindon (Reading), Joel Ndala (Manchester City)
Out: Andrew Omobamidele (Strausborg, Loan), Fin Back (Wycombe), Emmanuel Dennis (Blackburn Rovers, Loan), James Ward-Prowse (West Ham, Loan Recall)
Southampton
Southampton could easily become the first side to book their spot in next season’s Championship. The Saints have proven every pundit right and are rooted to the bottom of the table with just 9 points. Barring a miracle they could not survive past this season in the top flight.
However, there has not been a lack of trying from them. They have signed talented forward Welington from Sao Paulo. Albery Gronbaek and Joachim Kayi Sanda have also joined the club. Although, likely, they contribute more in the promotion push next season than the relegation fight this time around.
Grade: B+
In: Joachim Kayi Sanda (Valenciennes), Welington (Sao Paulo), Albert Gronbaek (Rennes, Loan), Izzet Furkan (Goztepe, Loan), Victor Udoh (Royal Antwerp)
Out: Ben Brereton Diaz (Sheffield United, Loan), Gavin Bazunu (Standard Liege, Loan), Adam Armstrong (West Bromwich Albion, Loan), Maxwel Cornet (West Ham, Loan Recall)
Tottenham Hotspur
Ange Postecoglu promised he would win things in his second season early on. But as things stand, he is closer to losing the job than he is to winning trophies in North London. The much-maligned Australian had to contend with a full-blown injury crisis at the Spurs stadium. Perhaps this is the only grace that is keeping him in his job.
Spurs’ backline was so bleak that any academy graduate could play for them. Early in the window, they signed Antonin Kinsky to replace Fraser Forster as the backup goalkeeper. The standin keeper has done an excellent job between the sticks. In the backline, Radu Dragusin was the only available centre-back and he too potentially succumbed to an ACL injury.
With the desperate need for signings, they acted late in the window again. Kevin Danso joined from Lens on a loan. They tried to secure Marc Guehi but failed when Crystal Palace refused to talk. Axel Disasi was sought on loan but the French man chose Villa. They remained empty-handed on that front.
In attack, they loaned the versatile Mathys Tel from Bayern Munich. Tel initially rejected a switch but had a change of heart and hopped on the flight. He could play a key role for them till Dominic Solanke is back to full speed. Even if he is back, Tel could easily play from wide areas making him a useful signing.
Grade: B+
In: Yang Min-hyeok (Gangwon FC), Antonin Kinsky (Salvia Prague), Kevin Danso (RC Lens, Loan), Mathys Tel (Bayern Munich, Loan), Reiss-Aledancer Russell-Denny (Chelsea), Luca Furnell-Gill (Liverpool), Dan Batty (Manchester City)
Out: Yang Min-hyeok (QPR, Loan), Will Lankshear (West Bromwich Albion, Loan), Alfie Dorrington (Aberdeen, Loan), Luca Gunter (Wealdstone, Loan)
West Ham
West Ham had a sensational transfer window but it turned out Julen Loputegui had no clue how to get the best out of his squad. He was let go in January and Graham Potter was brought back into the English game. Potter immediately showed glimpses of his magic by beating Fulham 3-2 at home. He could easily guide the club to safety with the resources available.
After a horror accident to Michail Antonio and constant injuries to Niclas Fullkrug, the Hammers wanted a striker. Potter turned to his ex-player who was also in need of minutes. They signed Evan Ferguson on loan with the hopes of helping each other’s cause. Potter also decided to bring back James Ward-Prowse in the hopes of controlling the games well with the set-piece maestro.

Wolverhampton Wanderers
The next five months are going to be very long for Wolves. They should all be braced for a relegation dogfight as their position could change multiple times before the end of the season. But we think Vitor Pereira’s men have enough firepower than the sides below them to stay afloat in the top flight.
The first key thing they did in the window was to secure Matheus Cunha’s signing on a new deal. It probably has a relegation clause but he won’t be staying at Molineux past this summer.
To shore up the defence, they signed two strong centre-backs Nasser Djiga and Emannuel Agbadou. They failed to get their hands on Kevin Danso as Tottenham hijacked the deal in the 11th hour. They should have an instant impact to help their new side survive this season.
Grade: B
In: Emmanuel Agbadou (Stade de Reims), Nasser Djiga (Red Star Belgrade), Marshall Munetsi (Stade de Reims)
Out: Luke Cundle (Milwall), Tawanda Chirewa (Huddersfield Town, Loan)
