Giovanni Reyna was born in England when his father was playing for the Premier League club Sunderland. In 2007, his parents moved to New York after his father Claudio Reyna retired. The former Sunderland midfielder enrolled his son’s name in the youth academy of NYCFC. Reyna played there until 2015, and joined Borussia Dortmund after that.

He completed his former education in New York. The young American prodigy showed his mettle on the turf during his four-year stint at the youth setup of the Black and Yellow. His energy and agility impressed the Dortmund management and he was sent to the senior team squad in 2019.

Club Career

In 2020: Giovanni Reyna made the biggest breakthrough of his career after he was handed his senior debut for Borussia Dortmund against Augsburg in the Bundesliga. Thus, he became the youngest American player to have ever played in the German top flight, breaking the record previously held by Cristian Pulisic. He also broke several records in the UEFA Champions League as well. He became the youngest US player to feature and assist in a UCL game after setting up the then Borussia Dortmund hero Erling Haaland for a beautiful goal.

In 2021: Reyna saw a meteoric rise in his career in 2021. The young attacker had taken German football by storm as he continuously displayed dazzling performances. Reyna set a unique world record in football by making three assists in a match and by doing so, he became the youngest player ever to complete a hat-trick of assists in Bundesliga. He also played in the final of the DFB Pokal 2021 and helped Borussia Dortmund lift the trophy beating RB Leipzig 4-1.

In 2022-23: Luck played a spoilsport in the rise of Giovanni Reyna as he was hit by multiple injuries in 2022. Despite being sidelined for weeks, he made his 50th Bundesliga appearance for Borussia.

In 2024: Reyna completed a contract extension with Borussia Dortmund until 2026. But, he was sent to Nottingham Forest on a loan deal. His Premier League journey has been something to forget. He stayed on the ground less than 250 minutes in a year, and could not find the back of the net once. Later he was brought back to the Bundesliga.

International Career

Giovanni Reyna was a household name in the youth teams of US football. However, he received his first international call-up in 2020, just after making his senior debut for Borussia Dortmund. His first senior goal came in the form of a direct free-kick in a 6-1 victory over Panama. In 2021, Reyna delivered big time in the final and helped USA beat Mexico 3-2 to win the CONCACAF Nations League. In 2023, he once again played the role of a hero and made two assists in a 2-0 victory against Canada to retain the trophy.

In the 2024 CONCACAF Nations League, Giovanni Reyna was named Player of the Match in the tournament as he was one of the top scorers of the tournament.
