As mentioned previously, Carlos Bocanegra grew up playing football in California, and after playing college football at UCLA, signed a Project-40 contract with Major League Soccer and was drafted by the Chicago Fire during the 2000 MLS SuperDraft. During his four years in the MLS, Bocanegra won the MLS Rookie of the Year Award, and the MLS Defender of the Year Award, twice, in 2002 and 2003.
Soon enough, Bocanegra gained the attention of clubs from abroad and chose his next destination to be the Premier League with Fulham in 2004. In his four years at the club, Bocanegra was utilized as a center-half, left-back, and at times as a holding midfielder as well. That said, after four good years at the club, it was time once again for a new adventure which took him across the pond and over to France and Ligue 1. With spells at Stade Rennais and Saint Etienne, Carlos would spend a further 3 years in the country before his next move.
In 2011, Carlos Bocanegra was signed by Scottish giants, Rangers FC on a three-year deal. A series of impressive performances saw Bocanegra become a fan favorite at the Glasgow club, earning him the nickname ‘Captain America’ as well. However, 2012 was a difficult time for Rangers FC as the club went into administration over financial problems and a dispute with HMRC, which subsequently led to a ten-point deduction. Despite the challenging circumstances, Carlos vowed to stay by the club and was fully dedicated to the cause.
However, after being dropped by the national team, Bocanegra admitted that he needed to be playing at a higher level, and as such, joined Spanish Segunda División side Racing Santander on loan. That said, a lack of starts and limited game time saw the player eventually settle on a move to Chivas USA in 2013 which was seen as a direct recommendation from then USMNT coach Jürgen Klinsmann. As such, Bocanegra would eventually call time on his career and retire at the end of the 2014 MLS season.

Carlos Bocanegra’s International Career
Despite what some may think after seeing his name, Carlos Bocanegra chose to represent the United States internationally, seeing as it was his birthplace and home. After starting his international career at the 1999 FIFA World Youth Championship, Bocanegra would then go on to make his senior debut for the USMNT in 2001, aged 22. By the time the 2003 Gold Cup came about, Carlos had become a key part of the team and a leader in defense.
As such, he would feature at center back and left back for his country during the 2006 World Cup, before captaining the national team at the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup. In 2011, Carlos joined the 100 cap club for his country but with the clock winding down on his career and his uncertain club situation with Rangers, he was slowly phased out of the team by 2012.
