Frank Lampard Considered for Canada National Team Manager Role
The former Chelsea manager has emerged as a shock candidate
In a stunning revelation, former Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is reportedly a top candidate for the coaching job at the Canadian national team. Lampard has been looking to return to management after leaving Chelsea’s interim position last year but had also been waiting for the ‘right’ opportunity.
Canada is set to co-host the 2026 FIFA World Cup, along with the US and Mexico, and the Maple Leaves want to make a mark on their home turf given the host of young talents in the squad. Lampard has emerged as a potential candidate for their managerial job, and the prospect of managing a national side may prompt him to return to management.
It also presents a good opportunity for him to rebuild his coaching career that was tainted by a poor spell at Everton, and then at Chelsea. With the Toffees, Lampard had a win rate of just 27% in all competitions. For the Blues, after replacing Graham Potter on an interim basis, the former midfielder won only once in 11 matches, which is a win percentage of nine.
Nonetheless, it depends on Lampard, whether he wishes to take up a role outside of club football or not.
Canada struggling for form
Although the 2026 FIFA World Cup is still two years away, Canada’s form right now is patchy ahead of the 2024 Copa America. The Maple Leaves have been invited to participate in the US showpiece, and have been drawn alongside world champions Argentina, as well as Mexico and former Copa America champions Chile. Since last year, the North American side has played 10 times, winning only four games. A good manager is the need of the hour right now for a side brimming with young talents.
